A man is in critical condition after a group of Newcastle University students took an illegal hallucinogenic drug they bought on the internet, police said today. All six people, thought to be aged between 19 and 22, fell ill after reportedly taking the drug 2CB at a house in Jesmond. Some of the people were from Newcastle University. The emergency services were called to a terraced house in Ripon Gardens at 3am yesterday after people reportedly took the Class A substance, which comes in purple capsules and is related to ecstasy. Five people were treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and have now been discharged, said Northumbria Police. The substance can also be sold as a white powder or as small pills. It is understood to be particularly dangerous when mixed with other drugs or alcohol. Two year-olds had been arrested and bailed pending further inquiries.
