NEW synthetic drugs that mimic the effects of cocaine, ecstasy and ice are flooding the Hunter. Login or signup to continue reading. Their legality is a matter of contention. Suppliers say they are working within the law while authorities point out that for a drug to be deemed legal its active ingredients must be known. In most cases the composition of these synthetic drugs is a mystery. What health workers and police are certain of is the dangers these new drugs pose. Price, availability and workplace drug testing were cited as reasons for using the new drugs. Fresh fears have also been raised about the increasing use of synthetic marijuana in the Hunter, with patients treated for anxiety, paranoia and heart rates of up beats a minute, more than double what is normal. The Herald reported last year on the emergence of Kronic as the recreational drug of choice in the mining industry because it could escape work drug testing. It was banned in NSW in June last year but re-entered Hunter stores just months later as manufacturers changed the formula to bypass the laws. Wesley Mission drug and alcohol counsellor Jenny Wallace said the chemical JWH, found in some Kronic-style drugs, could be up to five times more potent than THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
