The new ESMA leverage restrictions are designed to reduce the risk for novice and experienced traders across the Continent

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last few months, you’ll have heard about ESMA (the European Securities and Markets Authority) making changes to the way Spread Betting / CFDs work throughout Europe, with restrictions to leveraged accounts, reducing the risk for traders new and experienced across the Continent.
Essentially, as of August 1 2018, leverage on CFDs and major FX pairs will be traded with 30:1. Indices, the minor currency pairs and gold will be traded at 20:1, and other commodities and minor indices will be provided with a 10:1.
This is is somewhat different picture than the 200:1, 300:1 or 400:1 leverage we have seen recently from UK and European brokers and it changes the landscape somewhat for traders.
If you’re heavily experienced, you can self-certify as a professional trader and bypass ESMA’s draconian changes, but your broker is going to want some proof of your experience that they can verify before you get that.
Anyway, it’s not all bad. The leverage restrictions in place are there to save newbie traders from losing a ton of money whilst learning to trade. And let’s face it, about 90% of new traders do blow their accounts in no time at all, not helped by the huge leverage that you have been able to historically get (and may get again). Who knows – ESMA are due to review their leverage restrictions in a few months’ time.
There are several changes, depending on what you’re trading. Using IG.com as an example, given that they’re the biggest retail Spreadbetting broker in the UK, here’s what’s changing with ESMA leverage restrictions:
FX Majors – Current Margin Requirements: Rising from 0.5% to 3.3%
Stock Indices – Current Margin Requirements: Rising from 0.5% to 5% (a ten-fold increase)
Gold/Commodities – Current Margin Requirements: Rising from 0.5% to 5%
Let’s imagine you’re a new trader and you’ve put £500 into your trading account which is much too little anyway, but it’s not unheard of so let’s go with that.
Under the old ESMA rules, £500 would have enabled you to trade at £1 a point and use only around £60 of your margin (deposit) amount, meaning you can trade at perhaps £5/point if you so choose, or trade multiple instruments at £1/point.
Under the new ESMA rules, given the same £500 deposit/margin, you’ll use around £400 of that trading at £1/point, meaning that £1/point is all you can trade at, and you can only trade one instrument at any one time.
The main reason behind this is to prevent over-leveraging of accounts, prevent people blowing their accounts in no time at all – given that a major FX pair could easily move 100 points against you during news time and wipe out 1/5th of your margin/deposit if you had a £500 account at £1/point.
On the face of it, as someone who has been in this space for quite a while, I’d have to say yes the latest raft of ESMA changes do represent a positive step for the consumer. They put sensible leverage limitations in place for the new trader, helping them to manage their risk more effectively and reduce their exposure when, quite often, people won’t understand how highly leveraged it actually is.

There are many similarities between the gold rush and sports betting. H. W. Brands pointed out a very important issue on how gold rush lured and forced people to take risks in gambling over life more often than before. It made Americans crave for riches to the extent that they worked tirelessly and also in dangerous situations to acquire them as soon as possible. This did not work for everyone as some were unsuccessful.
Moving on to modern times, now most Americans developed a special interest in Las Vegas and took on risks to put up hotels and casinos all in the influence of the gold rush. After the war, America came back to be and capitalism took effect as professional sports spread its wings all over the country. A hundred years after the heat of California’s’ gold rush, gambling started with the state of Nevada by taking bets on sports in 1949.
Over time, a set of golden rules have been created in a effort to maximize your winning probabilities, they are therefore unbiased when it comes to betting. They are meant to cover the entire regular NFL season but may not apply for wagering on select games. This means the rules apply in a special order from the first rule through the 20th depending on how suitable the rule is.
The golden rules for betting against the spread are as follow:
Your bet should be on teams with a winning percentage of 750 on less than 6 days or against a team with worse records (success rated at 66.7%.)
Don’t bet on teams that have less than 350 straight-up winning percentage on less than 7 days or against one which has better records. (success rated at 61.2%)
Put your money on visitors who have less than 250 winning percentage against a team with a winning percentage that is at least 100 basis points higher.(success rated at 56.3%.)
Place your bets based on teams that have 16 game winning percentage. (success rated at 58.5%)
You can capitalize on underdogs when the point spread is at above 10. (success rated at 56.1%.)
Put your money on favorites on Thursdays. (success rated at 58.5%)
Cash in on visitors on Saturday. (success and rated at 58.5%)
Bet on teams with a straight-up winning percentage of 550 or better in less than 7 days or against a team with worse records. (success rated at 53.4%)
Bet on visitors on 6 days. (success rated at 55.0%)
Bet on favorites with less than 350 winning percentage against a team with a better or similar record. (success rated at 57.9%.)
Bet on underdogs with a winning percentage ranging from 350-649 against a team whose record lie within the same range. (success rated at 52.2%.)
Bet on teams looking at their 16-game straight-up winning percentage. (success rated at 54.1%)
Bet on teams with a winning percentage of 650 or against one which has a winning percentage of between 250-649. (success rated at 52.9%.)
Bet on a team that comes from a bye week against a team that is not coming from a bye week. (success rated at 54.6%.)
Bet on underdogs in September. (success rated at 50.3%.)
Bet on favorites on Monday. (success rated at 54.4%.)
Bet on visitors in November. (success rated at 53.3%.)
Bet on visitors in divisional games. (success rated at 52.2%.)
Bet on teams in certain divisional match-ups. (success rated at 61.3%.)
Bet on visitors. (success rated at 49.8%.)
If these rules are followed without any alterations they should perform against the spread in the regular games of the season. Happy betting!
