“In general, the rising popularity of sex toys over recent years demonstrates that society has become more comfortable bringing technology into the bedroom,” says Johanna Rief , head of sexual empowerment for Lovehoney Group . And thank goodness for that, especially considering orgasms aren’t one size fits all. Most people with vaginas can’t orgasm from penetration alone, so knowing what turns you on and gets you all the way—from nipple play to clitoral stimulation to—is key to having good sex. And what better way to figure it out than by playing solo? After all, they’re called toys for a reason.
Here’s what you can expect from your favorite sex toy brands and retailers in 2022.
According to Bryony Cole , global sex tech advisor for Lovehoney Group , new sex tech in 2022 will be influenced by society’s (way overdue) opening attitudes toward gender and sexuality, so you can expect to see gender-neutral products make waves.
Cute Little Fuckers, a sex toy brand that creates gender-inclusive toys and vibrators, has seen success with their Starsi and Zeep vibrators —neither of which is phallic shaped. “A lot in the adult toy world feels very safe, and as more people feel comfortable with sexuality and sexual expression, they're going to want toys with a lot more personality and expression as well,” says Step Tranovich , founder of Cute Little Fuckers. “Part of that expression is going to be the expression for all sorts of gender experiences. As functions go, we're gonna find more toys that explore beyond gender roles and function for various body parts.” We love to see it.
Much like society’s opening attitudes toward gender, 2022 will be a big year for sex positivity, which is already well on the rise (see: Dame’s ads on the New York City subway , Goop’s “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle , Netflix’s Sex Education ). As more people become comfortable talking about sex and pleasure (hi, welcome, we’ve been waiting for you), so, too will they get comfy displaying—or even wearing—their sex toys. “I'm hopeful that as the world starts to slowly open back up [following the COVID-19 pandemic], we'll see a resurgence in the trend of fashion-forward accessories and design,” says Polly Rodriguez , CEO and co-founder of Unbound . “This fits in with the broader trend of sexual wellness going more mainstream and becoming a component in the holistic view of health and wellness.”
Ti Chang , co-founder and chief design officer at Crave , echoes this. “I think we’ll see an acceleration of sexual wellness products being accepted in the mainstream—stores, entertainment, culture. And I believe the continued trend of sexual wellness in the mainstream will create interest in more creative, elevated options for people.”

Lora H. DiCarlo , founder and CEO of Lora DiCarlo, also points to the increased mainstream acceptance of sexual wellness as something that’s helped customers better understand what they enjoy in bed. “With this increased education and demand, sextech companies need to step-up and satisfy the market,” she says. “In 2022 we can expect to see new functions that help sophisticated shoppers get bigger orgasms with consistent, precise, and pinpointed stimulation.”

T3 has chatted to the experts and identified the five biggest trends coming to sex toys in 2022. It's a tech-heavy year. Get yourself ready.
If connected toys were the trend of 2021, 2022 sees them getting smaller and a whole lot more secretive. Mixing the excitement of a sex toy with the kinky thrill of clandestine public stimulation, wearable toys are due a big rise over the next year as more people open themselves up to trying them and pass their partners the remote. Honestly, what could be a better entrée, main course and dessert for dinner at a restaurant?
There's plenty out there. We-Vibe's slim Moxie, for example, is a remote- or app-controlled clitoral stimulator perfect to slide into one's underwear, with a strong magnet on the outer helping to hold it into place; for guys, the company's Vector prostate and perineum stimulator is flexible enough to stash away while offering the same connectivity. Those are great, but expect even slimmer, more discrete toys with more powerful tools to land in 2022.
Sex coach Cam Fraser (opens in new tab) thinks remote controlled toys are a solid addition for couples. "They’re great for foreplay," he tells T3, "and allow for edging and submission fun and games to spice things up. App controlled toys give your partner control of when (and how much) you orgasm, forming a fun new dynamic to power play."
Remote control does not have to simply mean under-the-table stimulation. New connected toys are changing the way we're able to build relationships, too. "For couples in long distance relationships, app controlled toys are a fantastic way to get intimate," says Cam Fraser. "They allow one person to hand over the reins of their pleasure to the other, regardless of not being together physically."
