You can now see where you fit in on the new alternative to the Kinsey scale.
The Kinsey scale, developed in 1948, is a more diverse way of defining someone’s sexuality, when compared to exclusively using traditional labels of gay straight or bisexual, as it asks people to plot themselves on a scale of sexuality from 0 (exclusively heterosexual) to 6 (exclusively homosexual).
This tends to provide a fascinating picture of sexuality – for example, while only only 1.6 percent of people identify as LGB when given strict labels to choose from, almost half of young people don’t identify as exclusively straight when asked to plot their sexuality on the Kinsey scale.
However, there is now a new way of measuring sexuality that includes even more options than the Kinsey scale.
The new Purple-Red Scale of Sexuality, posted on Reddit, measures attraction in two ways:
The first way measures who someone is attracted to and remains the same as the Kinsey scale. The second way measures how attracted you are to them ranging from A (Aromantic Asexuality), which means you experience no attraction besides friendship, to F (Hyper Sexuality) where sex is the only interest.
However this new scale has received mixed reviews on Reddit.
Some love the new scale saying its looks great and definitely beats the Kinsey scale.
Others have criticised it for conflating sex and gender and it implies romantic attraction is a requirement for sexual attraction.
