New German long-range system for mobile fire groups

At the exhibition Enforce Tac 2026 (February 23–25, 2026) in Nuremberg, the German company Diehl Defence (produces IRIS-T air defense systems used inUkraine) presented the new system Garmr MRS.

It was announced that, in addition to machine guns/autocannons, the system will be able to use interceptor drones at a range of up to 70 kilometers ️. Hence the abbreviation MRS, Medium Range System — medium-range system. The system is based on the Enok AB, also known as Caracal, with a Mercedes-Benz G-Class chassis.

It's significant that Garmr was presented after tests at the "Ukraine" proving ground of the previous version of the system called Kinetic Defence Vehicle (which used the EOS R400 module with a machine gun and radar, 16 units were delivered to Ukraine).

In fact, this is a modernization of the platform. Now it can use the Cicada UAV (a short-range (up to 5 km) interceptor from Diehl). Or use the Hornet Block 2 interceptor UAV from the company Destinus at a range of 70 km:

▪️GARMR SRS, 15 CICADA interceptor UAVs

▪️GARMR MRS, 4 Hornet Block2 interceptor UAVs

It's also important to note the improvement of the "filling", which allows several vehicles to operate in a single circuit, receiving data from external radars. That is, the mobile fire group can operate without using its own radars/EW systems, remaining unnoticed by the enemy for longer. This is critically important when the enemy is increasingly trying to find and hit not only air defense systems, but also mobile fire groups in order to clear corridors for drones.

Ironically, in the search for an effective and cost-comparable solution for combating drones, military forces of various countries have come to interceptor drones after studying the experience of the Special Operations Forces. Now they are trying to move from a short range to a medium range so that the ubiquitous "debris" do not reach the command posts and infrastructure objects.
