The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is inaugurated as part of the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entry point can be found within Refaim Park below Ein Laban. While the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half one kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially inaugurated by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister ZeevElkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company chairman, and hundreds of cyclists.

נווה פריצקי Jerusalem was a desirable tourist destination due to its glorious history. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures the modern tourist industry is incorporated into the city of Jerusalem. "The inauguration (of the tunnel) is a further step in the growth of Jerusalem as well as the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular tourist destination for all kinds of audiences throughout Israel as well as around the world."

Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop all aspects of Jerusalem's tourism and the development of innovative attractions and ventures that connect the rich history of our eternal capital to its future... I encourage cyclists to take advantage of a the modern, well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the distinctive scenery of Old Jerusalem.

The project was funded by Elkin's ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was done by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stressed, "The Kerem Tunnel project will be a central instrument in achieving our goal to change the notion of transportation in Jerusalem." "The tunnel, which is being constructed to connect to Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and ones that are paved in its areas. It is intended to encourage biking among its residents and promote the green revolution in transport in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move its main sewer line towards Sorek's purification plant.

Construction of roads, installation, blowers, modern security systems and electrical wiring are all part of the ongoing construction. The tunnel will be safe for the people to use all season.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to unique recreation locations, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the Biblical aquarium and zoo as also the historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
