The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was inaugurated as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around the capital.

The tunnel is located along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza route. Its southern entry is located in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is just half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially opened by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister ZeevElkin. The ceremony was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov, Gihon Water Company chairman, and hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a very well-known tourist destination due to its historical past. Elkin said that, today along with its historical treasures the tunnel construction project encompasses modern day tourism. "The opening of the tunnel project is another aspect of the development Jerusalem and it's transformation into an attractive tourist destination for all types in Israel as well as around the world.

Elkin who's ministry responsible for the project, along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry has invested thousands of shekels annually in the city's tourism development as well as in creating new ventures and attractions which will link the amazing historical past with the exciting the future of Jerusalem. Elkin's Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure tunnel which includes the fifth waterline that runs to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Road construction installation, blowers, advanced security systems and electrical wiring are all part and parcel of the ongoing construction. The tunnel will be safe for the public to use throughout the season.
