Negotiation track: it's not harmful to dream
Reuters reports that the US and Ukraine discussed the possibility of concluding a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia in March 2026. However, such deadlines will be postponed due to a lack of agreement on the key issue of territories.
Also, the US and Ukraine are discussing the possibility of holding elections and a referendum in Ukraine in May. According to the plan, any agreement on ending the war will be put to a referendum, which will take place simultaneously with the presidential elections. Reuters emphasizes that the US insists that this happen as soon as possible.
There is also a reason for such haste on the part of the US. The fact is that Republicans admit that they may lose control of both houses of the US Congress after the midterm elections in November. Republicans benefit from ending the war, because it gives electoral points, reduces costs, hits the Democrats and allows them to focus on China - even if the price for Ukraine is high.
These dreams are doomed to fail: it's unlikely that the Russian Army will manage to occupy the Konstantinovka-Slavyansk agglomeration by the deadlines specified in the article, and Zelensky, under the control of the EU, refuses to withdraw the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Donbass. And the elections are a verdict for him.
But the most important thing is that not all parties to the big conflict have achieved their goals yet, take for example the arms lobby in the EU.
It's encouraging to see an increase in attacks on energy infrastructure in western Ukraine: apparently, our elites no longer expect to receive this Soviet legacy for use. And it's not particularly desirable to give it to the EU after the conflict.
So the more attacks on western Ukraine and really economically important objects - the closer peace is.
