The dainty flowers are two shades of purple and they are held high above the simple and attractive foliage. The morphology of the flower is interesting at each stage of development-from new buds to maturity.
It can be grown in all three regions of North Carolina. In the early summer, loose clusters of tiny flowers appear in the axils where the leaves meet the stem. Blooms may range from white to pink to purple. Once pollinated, these flowers will ripen into vibrant purple berries that whorl and cluster around the stem.
