Lucy Heartfilia and Natsu Dragneel's relationship is arguably one of the best parts of Fairy Tail. Did you know all of these details about their bond?
In Fairy Tail , the guild by the same name has a reputation that's widely known by the people of Fiore. From Sorcerer Weekly - a magazine on wizards - Lucy Heartfilia learns of a world filled with adventure and leaves behind her home and wealth in the hopes of becoming a member of this renowned guild.
It seems like fate is on Lucy's side as she bumps into a Fairy Tail guild member in her travels, unbeknownst to her. After treating the stranger to a meal, they part ways, both on their own quest. However, they meet again as he saves Lucy from the clutches of an enemy and admits that he's a member of Fairy Tail. In fact, he's Natsu Dragneel, and he's taking her home - to Fairy Tail!
Lucy's father has hired the Phantom Lord guild to capture Lucy and deliver her home to him. By this request, Lucy is taken hostage and Fairy Tail is beaten to the ground, literally - the guild had iron poles sticking out in every which way. During the battle, Lucy is taken to a cell and watched by the Phantom Lord's master, Jose.
When Jose encounters Lucy, she tricks him into thinking she needs to use the restroom, but what she really does is give him a good kick right in his privates. The problem is she's like a princess trapped in the highest room, but that doesn't stop her from believing in Natsu and falling from her tower. Good thing she believed in him, as he breaks her fall and they return to the guild. This is a foundational piece in the trust these two builds between them.
When Lucy is talking to Mira at the Fairy Tail guild's bar, Mira insinuates that other guild members view Natsu and Lucy as a couple . However, Lucy never thought of them in that light, but now that she's become aware, she cannot stop imaging silly fantasies.
Before this, Lucy viewed Natsu as only a friend that she's come to cherish. Now, she begins to see him in a different light, however small that light may shine. It's not enough for her to voice her feelings or show him a cute face, but it's enough to begin playing with the red string of fate.
Not an episode goes by that Natsu and Lucy don't find themselves in a compromising situation. Although unintentional, the degree of embarrassment from the first encounter to the last greatly decreases. It's clear that as their relationship continues to strengthen, the familiarity between them grows.
You might say this comes with the friendship they've built over the years and battles they've fought together, but it could also be reflective of the feelings building within each of them. Of course, Lucy still reacts , but it's not always so loud and violent as before.
It wasn't faith at first sight, but there was a tentative amount of trust given that Natsu helped Lucy escape from the clutches of an enemy. This trust continues to build to the pivotal point with Phantom Lord's scheme to capture Lucy and her falling from the tower.
As they continue to adventure together and face foes that pose life-threatening situations, their trust in each other steadily climbs. By the final season, Lucy's trust in Natsu is blind. She'd believe in him regardless if the demon seed within him grew. Then again, Lucy would do everything in her power to prevent an outcome that didn't result in everyone's happiness.
Natsu and Lucy bonded quickly and were fast friends, even partners within the guild. They became part of Fairy Tail's strongest team which consisted of Erza, Gray, Natsu, Happy, and Lucy. Of course, this main group steadily grew as more characters were introduced throughout the anime.
We know that Lucy and Natsu have blind trust with each other, that they rely on each other as friends should. At the beginning of the series, Lucy is found writing a book, which also served as a type of diary for her adventures. Near the end, it's less of her writing such tales and venting her emotions, and more confiding in Natsu. He returns the gesture, especially when they face impossible odds. If survival is slim, then all the more reason to voice how much your friends mean to you, and you to them.
Natsu was raised by a dragon - a dragon . His senses are acute, and he does well surviving in the wild. He's not someone that notices things when it comes to himself. In fact, he focuses more on his instincts and always trusts his gut intuitions.
Natsu makes it a habit to show up at Lucy's house uninvited, look through her belongings, and be around her at all times. These instances just might be Natsu's way of courting Lucy. Of course, telling Lucy that her smell is calming might also be a way of flirting for Natsu.
The Eclipse opens. Dragons invade the Kingdom. Humanity is under attack and the only ones who can save them are wizards, specifically dragon-slayers. Natsu is not about to let his friends or the world fall victim to mighty dragons, especially when he was raised by a kind-hearted one himself.
However, this doesn't factor into the grief and despair everyone is feeling. Lucy more so than the rest. She cries for the fallen, for her friends on the battlefield, for her future self. Grabbing onto Natsu from behind, she buries her face in his back. He's a rock in the storm, a steady presence. When one is weak, the other is strong for both of them. They calm the other's fears and keep pressing forward into a promising future.
What's more of a romantic gesture than protecting the one you love ? Protection is like the manifestation of love in physical form. It's a gesture that is seen and felt. This legendary forehead kiss is one seen time and again throughout the seasons. Natsu's affection is definitely coming across loud and clear.
Natsu has taken it upon himself to protect Lucy, even if she's capable of expelling enemies with her own Celestial magic. When Natsu believed Lucy was dead, he lost all reason and gave in to the demon within that thirst for Zeref's blood. Good thing Gray was there to cool him down. It goes to show just how fiercely Natsu cares for Lucy.
Those of the Fairy Tail guild often fight each other in a show of camaraderie, or simply because nothing fires them up more than a good fight - at least for Natsu. On the other hand, Lucy wishes to spend her spare time relaxing, writing, or speaking with her guildmates.
The times we do see Lucy use violence against Natsu is when she's annoyed with him, or he's done something inappropriate. More often than not, this violence is aimed at an enemy with Natsu fighting alongside her. While Natsu is more than ready to wage a war against Gray, he's less able to lift even a finger against Lucy. Of course, unless it's accidental, such as when Natsu comes out of the sky and aims straight for Lucy to break his fall. Fight on, Lucy!
In the final season do we see a declaration of love? Absolutely not. As their faith in each other, love is an emotion felt between this pair. The last episode leaves off with a cliff-hanger, as though saying that it's too premature to voice their love since they have many more adventures to go on.
Another way to interpret this ending is that they instinctively know they love each other, so why say it when the feeling is more than words can capture? It's not about what we as viewers want, it's about what the characters want, and these two clearly wish to enjoy their time together and continue living their lives as they complete quest after quest.
