Native Token Rename: Toncoin (TON) → Gram (GRAM)

Native Token Rename: Toncoin (TON) → Gram (GRAM)

Integration Brief for Projects

TL;DR

The community vote on the proposal to rename the native token of The Open Network from Toncoin to Gram, changing its ticker from TON to GRAM, has concluded — and the proposal was accepted.

Voting opened June 1, 2026 and closed June 8, 2026. The community voted in favour, so all ecosystem projects, including exchanges, are expected to make a coordinated update of the asset name, logo and ticker at 12:00 PM (UTC) on June 15, 2026.

By June 22, 2026, full consistency is expected, with all projects having completed the name, ticker, and logo updates.

This is a display-name-logo-and-ticker change only. There is no migration, no swap, no bridge, no claim, and no action required from users.

What Changes / What Doesn't

Native token name — CHANGES (phased): Toncoin → Gram. Display as "Gram (prev. Toncoin)" for 3 months post-deadline, then "Gram" only.

Ticker symbol — CHANGES: TON → GRAM.
Logo — CHANGES: GRAM logo available at https://ton.org/media/ .
Blockchain / network name — Unchanged: Remains "TON / The Open Network".
Native asset role — Unchanged: Same asset, same contract, same ledger.
User balances — Unchanged:
10 TON = 10 GRAM. No redenomination.
Deposit / withdrawal addresses — Unchanged:
All existing addresses remain valid.
Smart contracts — Unchanged:
No redeployment or interaction needed.
Gas fees — Unchanged:
Paid in the native token, displayed as GRAM.
Staking / validator positions — Unchanged:
Positions intact, displayed as GRAM.
NFTs & Jettons — Unchanged:
No impact on any token contracts or metadata.
DeFi positions — Unchanged:
Lending, LP, borrowing — all unaffected.
CEX balances — Unchanged:
Custodial holdings unaffected.
Swap / bridge / claim / migration — None:
No such process exists. Anything claiming otherwise is a scam.

Transition Display Period

To minimise user confusion during the switchover, exchanges are recommended to display the asset as "Gram (prev. Toncoin)" — with the legacy name shown in parentheses — for a period of 3 months following the update deadline. After this transition window, the legacy name "Toncoin" may be removed and the asset displayed as "Gram" / GRAM only. This applies to trading pair labels, asset listings, deposit/withdrawal screens, and any user-facing UI where the token name appears.

Voting: How It Went

The vote ran on TON Vote — an established open DAO governance platform built on TON, developed by the Orbs Network team. The smart contracts are open-source: github.com/orbs-network/ton-vote.

Mechanics:

  • Ran for one week, June 1–8, 2026
  • Voting power was based on each voter's TON balance at the snapshot taken on May 31, 2026. Tokens acquired afterwards did not count toward voting weight.
  • Options: For / Against / Abstain
  • Proposer: Telegram (verified organisation on TON Vote)
  • A simple majority of participating voting power determined the outcome

The vote was on-chain and fully transparent. Results are verifiable by any participant. The proposal passed.

Background & Motivation

The rename is part of the MTONGA (Make TON Great Again) initiative and reflects two significant developments:

Structural: Telegram's Expanded Role. Telegram is becoming the primary driving force behind TON and is now the network's largest validator. This shift has accelerated the technical roadmap and given the protocol a clear direction.

Protocol Milestone: Recent Performance Upgrades

  • Transaction throughput increased 10 times
  • Transaction finality: sub-second
  • Transaction fees reduced ~6 times (approaching near-zero)
  • Renewed focus on protocol-level technical excellence

Historical Name. In the original TON White Paper, the native token was named Gram. The name has persisted in the core TON codebase since inception. This rename surfaces the original name publicly, marking the network's entry into a new chapter.

Security & Scam Prevention

⚠️ This is a name-and-ticker change only. No user needs to move, swap, claim, bridge, or convert anything.

Any website, bot, or message instructing users to "migrate TON to GRAM", "claim your GRAM", or "convert TON to GRAM" is a scam.

Exchanges are strongly encouraged to include the following in their user communications:

No action is required from users. Balances are unchanged.
There is no migration, swap, bridge, or claim process of any kind.
Any platform asking users to "claim GRAM" or "convert TON to GRAM" is fraudulent.
The TON blockchain is not being renamed — only the native token's display name changes.

FAQ

What exactly is changing? The native token's display name changes from "Toncoin" to "Gram" and its ticker changes from TON to GRAM. Nothing changes at the protocol level.

Is the TON blockchain being renamed? No. The blockchain and network retain the name TON / The Open Network.

Is GRAM a new or different token? No. GRAM is the same asset as TON. No new contract, no new issuance, no new asset. It is a rename of the existing native token.

Do user balances change? No. A balance of 10 TON becomes 10 GRAM. The underlying amount is identical. No redenomination occurs.

Do deposit and withdrawal addresses change? No. All existing TON addresses remain fully valid. No address migration is required.

Do we need to create a new asset listing? No. Update the name and ticker on the current listing. Do not create a new one.

Do smart contracts need to be updated? No. All existing contracts continue to operate exactly as before.

Do trading pairs need to be recreated? No. Rename existing pairs (e.g. TON/USDT → GRAM/USDT). Order books and trade history are continuous.

Is there a hard deadline for exchanges to update? Yes — 12:00 PM UTC, June 15, 2026. Exchanges are expected to complete updates within this window.

What about historical price data and charts? Historical price data is continuous — there is no break in the price series. Exchanges may relabel historical data as GRAM at their discretion.

Where can we follow official updates? Governance vote: ton.vote | Official announcements: Toncoin.
