The Curse of the Ninth: Nationals vs. Pirates

Pittsburgh, PA – October 1, 2024

The final game of the regular season between the Washington Nationals and the Pittsburgh Pirates was supposed to be meaningless. Both teams had been eliminated from playoff contention months ago. But as the first pitch approached under the dimming lights of PNC Park, an eerie tension settled over the field.

The Legend of the Ninth

For decades, a local myth whispered that any game between the Nationals (and their predecessor, the Expos) and the Pirates that went into extra innings on the last day of the season would end in bizarre fashion. The last time it happened—September 30, 1979—a blackout halted the game in the 12th inning, and it was never completed. Some said it was a curse. Others called it coincidence.

Tonight, the legend would be tested.

The Game Unfolds

The Nationals struck first with a two-run homer from Lane Thomas in the third. The Pirates answered in the sixth with a bases-loaded double from rookie phenom Paul Skenes, making it 3-2. The score held until the top of the ninth, when CJ Abrams tied it with a clutch RBI single.

Strange Things Begin

In the 10th, Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds hit a deep fly ball—only for it to vanish mid-air. The umpires ruled it a ground-rule double, though no one saw where it went.

In the 11th, Nationals reliever Kyle Finnegan’s pitches started curving the wrong way. The Pirates’ dugout erupted in protest, but the umpires saw nothing unusual.

Then, in the 12th, the stadium lights flickered. A cold wind swept through the stands despite the 70-degree night. The scoreboard glitched, displaying the year 1979 instead of 2024.

The Final Play

With two outs in the bottom of the 13th, Pirates catcher Henry Davis hit a routine grounder to short—but the ball split in half mid-throw. One half reached first base for the out. The other half rolled into the dugout, where it was caught by… a man in a 1979 Pirates jacket.

The umpires huddled, then abruptly called the game. Final score: 3-3.

As the players left the field, the scoreboard flashed one last message:

'SEE YOU IN 2049.'

The next morning, MLB officially recorded the game as a 3-3 tie—despite ties being impossible under normal rules. When reporters asked about the strange events, both managers shrugged.

'Just baseball things,' Pirates manager Derek Shelton said.

'We don’t talk about the curse,' Nationals skipper Dave Martinez muttered before quickly walking away.

And so, the legend lived on.
