Nationals Edge Out Pirates in Nail-Biting Pitcher’s Duel

Pittsburgh, PA – May 22, 2025 – In a tense, low-scoring affair at PNC Park, the Washington Nationals narrowly defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1, thanks to a stellar performance by their pitching staff and a clutch late-game hit from rookie sensation Jordan House.

The game was a classic pitcher’s duel, with Nationals’ ace Josiah Gray tossing six shutout innings, striking out eight while allowing just three hits. Pirates’ rookie phenom Paul Skenes matched him nearly pitch-for-pitch, going seven strong innings with nine strikeouts and only one earned run.

The Nationals broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh when Lane Thomas drove in Luis García Jr. with an RBI single. The Pirates responded in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homerun from Bryan Reynolds, tying the game at 1-1.

But in the ninth, Washington’s 22-year-old outfielder Jordan House—called up just last week—delivered a two-out RBI double off Pirates closer David Bednar, scoring Keibert Ruiz for the go-ahead run. Nationals’ closer Kyle Finnegan then shut the door in the bottom half, securing the narrow victory.

'Just trying to stay calm and put a good swing on it,' House said postgame. 'Bednar’s one of the best, so it’s a huge confidence booster.'

The Nationals (24-23) have now won four of their last five, while the Pirates (21-26) continue to struggle in close games, dropping to 5-9 in one-run decisions this season.

The series continues tomorrow night, with Washington’s MacKenzie Gore set to face Pittsburgh’s Jared Jones in another intriguing pitching matchup.
