This still-unofficial holiday falls on the last Friday of July-right in the middle of family vacation road trips to visit relatives-and this year, that’s today. A petition on Facebook to make it an officially recognized holiday on par with Mother’s Day or Father’s Day has only around 100 likes as of press time. Finally, a holiday just for Uncle John. You cannot ask for faster and better service from the uncle. The origin of Children’s Day began in 1856 when Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard from Massachusetts held a service dedicated on the second Sunday in June. No one knows where the idea for National Aunt and Uncle’s Day first originated. I liked to go there in the soft, early dusk; the smooth noiseless ascent of the lift, and the lighted floors that we passed, gave one an odd, dreamy feeling. I just couldn’t believe how many there were. As holidays go, it’s not quite up there with Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. There’s a National Grandparents Day (it’s in September, and not widely celebrated).
