National Bra Day
National Brownie Day
October 26, 2021
Celebrated on the third Wednesday in October, the BRA USA day is observed to educate and create awareness among the general public regarding breast cancer and the various procedures that women can resort to after undergoing life-altering procedures such as mastectomy or lumpectomy.
Cancer has become one of the leading causes of death in the 21st century owing to lifestyle changes, environmental factors, and obesity in adolescents and young adults as well. According to the recent reports by WHO, over 2.26 million new breast cancer cases were reported in 2020 alone. While advanced medical technology has been employed in the early screening, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer patients, the rehabilitation options following treatment are less popular and unexplored. The BRA Day USA is here to change that!
The month of October is all about educating the masses on breast cancer. The BRA Day USA or the Breast Reconstruction Awareness day is celebrated in the same month and is observed to bridge the gap that is found in most of the awareness programs; the lack of outreach concerning the breast reconstruction procedures available after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. While it might seem like a secondary issue compared to the ordeals of the treatment and recovery, many women struggle with the fact that they have to live without a part of their body that once shaped their dresses and fed their young ones.
Research showed that at the time of a breast cancer diagnosis many women are unaware of the breast reconstruction options that they can avail and this was one of the founding reasons for the observance. The campaign is sponsored and financially supported by several individuals, private practice, corporations, and associations like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF). Their motto of educating, engaging, and empowering women to choose what is apt for them after breast cancer also includes educating their family, women, and caregivers that unless a woman is aware of the options available, the process is still incomplete.
The campaigns adopt a multifaceted approach involving traditional and modern methods involving national and local programs to inform and communicate to the public the options available after a mastectomy or lumpectomy. A breast reconstruction enables the breasts to have a normal appearance after undergoing the procedures. The reconstruction can either be flap reconstruction or implant-based. The implant-based reconstruction employs breast implants to restore the form whereas autologous or flap reconstruction uses a graft from the patient’s own body. The decision to undergo these procedures depends on several factors like the type of mastectomy, the patient’s body type, and cancer treatment.
A notable event that was inspired from the BRA day, is the No Bra Day. The No Bra day event was conceived by an anonymous individual named Anastasia Doughnuts. She published the event by creating a website and promoted the event when BRA day was celebrated for the first time in Toronto in 2011. While events like the No Bra day focuses on breast cancer screening and awareness programs, the BRA day focuses more on breast reconstruction.
This day paves a way to make individuals more cautious about breast health which subsequently leads to early detection, diagnosis, and prevention of breast cancer. While breasts are considered a taboo topic people are encouraged to talk about breast cancer which is one of the preventable forms of cancer. The BRA Day is all about enabling women to make an informed decision about their bodies and reassuring them throughout the journey by affirming that above all, their choice matters the most.
The best way to observe this day is to nip cancer at an early stage. For this regular screening and self-examination are recommended. Notice any abnormal changes in your breast such as lumps, discharge, puckering, or dimpling.
If you are a guy you can encourage your friends and family to take up screening and self-examinations regularly.
For women aged above 35, a mammogram is highly recommended, especially if there is a family history.
– You can sponsor a BRA procedure or send your donations to the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Funds and other organizations that sponsor women who do not have the means to undergo the procedure.
Share your posts on BRA using the #BRADayUSA on social media and voice your support for the event by joining campaigns.
-The first case of breast cancer was recorded in the Edwin Smith Papyrus found in Egypt. The case reported growths and ulcers within the breast.
-The first radical mastectomy was performed in 1882 by an American Surgeon William Halsted. The procedure came to be known as Halsted Mastectomy.
-It is estimated that more than 3 million women in the US have a history of breast cancer
-The song “Flower” written by the songwriter and singer Jewel was dedicated to BRA Day. She is the spokeswoman for the campaign.
-The Pink ribbons became the official symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness after the Susan G Komen Foundation gave out pink ribbons to the breast cancer survivors who participated in the event Race for the Cure in 1991.
The BRA Day was first organized by the Canadian plastic surgeon, Dr. Mitchell Brown. It was an event based on learning and sharing on breast reconstruction. The event gained popularity and was observed in the USA for the first time as BRA Day USA on 17th October.

Celebrating No Bra Day is as simple as not wearing a bra, but if you’re in the mood to do more for yourself and others, then there are several important options. First off, get yourself to your doctor and schedule a breast exam. Catching breast cancer early isn’t tricky, and if you do so, you’ll have a greater chance of coming out of it without so much as a scar. Encourage your friends to do the same, and maybe even take some time to work together to create a fundraiser or support a local agency that’s holding one.
There are several other ways that you can celebrate No Bra Day as well. It would help if you were to raise awareness about the condition. Thanks to the Internet and social media, this is something that we can do with much greater ease today.

If you are a woman and you are reading this, you will know exactly what we are referring to when we say that removing your bra once you get home is one of life’s great pleasures! If you are a man, you will just have to take our word for it. However, No Bra Day does not celebrate this little comfort that all women can relate to. It is much bigger and more important than this.
No Bra Day is about the fight against breast cancer. A lot of people know someone who has experienced breast cancer. It is a horrible disease, which can have a heartbreaking conclusion. No Bra Day encourages women around the world to ditch their bra to raise awareness for this disease. It is an excellent day in terms of supporting women who have experienced breast cancer or are going through it at the moment and raising awareness about the condition so that we can, hopefully, find a cure for it.
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. It is believed that one in eight women will be diagnosed with this illness in their lifetime. That’s a pretty high number! While there is a good chance of recovery, there have been a lot of women who have lost their lives because of this terrible disease.
Early diagnosis is imperative, and while breast cancer is most common in women over the age of 50-years-old, women of any age can get it. We must have days like No Bra Day to raise awareness about this condition and make sure that we are all doing our best to raise funds and education to find a cure for breast cancer.

No Bra Day was established to raise awareness of breast cancer and its prevalence in today’s society and drive fundraising opportunities to keep the research moving. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lives and have to battle a disease that can, at worst, be lethal.
But outside of just its lethality, it also has the possibility of impacting a woman’s view of herself, her ability to breastfeed and can result in surgeries that include mastectomies. Breasts are the primary identifiers of what makes a woman, visually, a woman, and having them removed in the fight against breast cancer can lead to self-image issues and depression.
Why is it that women everywhere choose not to wear a bra to raise awareness of this horrible disease? Women who have been through a battle with breast cancer often have to wear a prosthesis to hide the fact that they’ve had a breast or breasts removed and are unable to go without a bra as a result. By spending the day without a bra, you can raise awareness and prevent other women from going through this experience.
National No Bra Day’s origins can be traced back to two days in history: July 9, 2011, and October 19, 2011. The latter was founded in Toronto, Canada, where it was initially titled BRA Day by Dr Mitchell Brown. People celebrate BRA (Breast Reconstruction — An Event of Learning and Sharing) Day to raise awareness for women who undergo a mastectomy and encourage self-examinations. In July that same year, a person using the pseudonym Anastasia Doughnuts conceived National No Bra Day to raise breast cancer awareness, along with a website to help promote the event’s occurrence. Three years later, the two days were combined and pushed to October 13 to be celebrated during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
In 1600 BC, The first case of any cancer showed up in Egypt on The Edwin Smith Papyrus. It described eight different cases of growths and ulcers found within the breast. In the year 1882, American surgeon William Halsted performed the Halsted Mastectomy (which is considered the first radical mastectomy). In 1985 A weeklong organized event occurred in the United States to spread breast cancer awareness. In 1991, The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation began handing out pink ribbons to breast cancer survivors running in its Race For The Cure event.

Yes? No.. Sort of | Maybe ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What's really intersting is how whilst some National Days like National Daughters Day are seemingly celebrated internationally irrespective of geography, some very popular days (That often become the No. 1 National Day on our homepage) are in fact locally very specific and are offical holidays celebrated on a Country's national calendar. Take National Rambutan Day for instance, Rambutan is a popular Souteast Asian fruit and not seen so much in the UK, Europe or the USA. Some regionally specific trends subsequently become immensely popular internationally and worldwide, partly fuelled by widely shared 'National Days', National Pabebe Wave Day being one such example.
