I recently bought new strings for my acustic guitar, and some kind of hidious green stuff has formed under the strings...? I've never seen anything like it. Can anyone tell me what it is?
Dead skin and sweat coming in contact with, and electrolytically corrosive metal string. That crap collects on the fretboard (and mixes with fretboard glue), and makes a gunky mess.
This makes me feel sick to my stomach... Hopefully it doesn't damage my fret board somehow. Thank you for your answer.
Probably bronze corrosion (aka rust). Enough moisture and salt (ie, sweat, rain, spilled margaritas..whatever) left over on the strings will do it. Clean your strings more often, be sure to get the underside and not just the top of the strings, and/or don't by that brand of strings again. A coated string like Elixirs, etc.. should prevent it from happening again.
Okey, thank you. They're fender strings... So they're not really made by a shitty brand, but I guess they've come in contact with water somehow.
I have seen this when people have allergies to brass and/or copper. Cheap rings produce a really surprising amount of green goo in some people.
The usual remedy is to wear better quality jewelry: high-carat gold or sterling silver. Not really an option with guitar strings, but some brands may be worse for allergies than others. Empirically, coated strings like Elixirs may be less allergenic.
how long ago was recently? grime tends to form on strings after a while and it's a sign that you need to change strings. also, depending on how bad it is, i recommend you clean your fretboard.
Maybe like 5/6 weeks ago, I have another guitar that I've had for 2/3 years. And I've never switched strings on it, they are fine (basically the same brand of strings just a different gauge).
I know that many guitar players tend to not change their strings as often as they should, but I can't lie and say that I play every day. So I think that you should at least be able to still play on them after 5/6 weeks. Or am I wrong?
