PreS-Gr 2—In this follow-up to Silly Doggy (Orchard, 2011), Lily's mom gives her skeptical daughter a fluffy little kitten instead of a long-hoped-for pooch. The child admonishes her new pet to behave and not make a mess, but each time she leaves kitty alone, she discovers chaotic mayhem upon her return. What Lily doesn't know but readers can clearly see is that the havoc is being wreaked by a huge tiger that hides whenever Lily comes near (the endpapers alert them to his escape from the zoo). The commotion appears to abate when the tiger follows a neighbor's dog, sporting a tiger-striped sweater. The book ends with a promise of more misadventures as a zoofull of animals cavorts, unbeknownst to Lily, in her backyard. The cartoon watercolor-and-ink illustrations use a combination of spreads and small vignettes to capture both the disasters caused by the tiger and the tenderness of Lily's acceptance of her kitten. Children will enjoy the jokes and spotting the tiger lurking, while adults will appreciate the goofy endpaper news items that reveal more about the story beyond its ending.—Marge Loch-Wouters, La Crosse Public Library, WI
Oh, the injustice! Poor Kitty is minding his own business, being a good boy, when an escaped tiger comes to the house and makes a terrible mess. Kitty’s owner, Lily, originally wanted a dog, but she is happy with her adorable and seemingly no-fuss cat. So she is not at all amused by the work her “naughty” kitty is creating for her. But readers will be much amused as the story plays out like a scene from a British pantomime. The signs are everywhere for Lily to see the truth; the escaped tiger is headline news in the paper lying on the kitchen table, as well as on the television. Not to mention the poorly camouflaged tiger, which Lily would see if she simply turned around and looked behind her. This companion to Silly Doggy! (2012) continues the idea of mistaken identity. Kitty’s passivity in the face of blame is as amusing as the havoc the tiger is wreaking in his name. A punch line of an ending indicates that Kitty might yet have some explaining to do. --Kara Dean

I loved, loved, LOVED Adam Stower's "Silly Doggy!" and I searched high and low for a copy of "Naughty Kitty" but couldn't find it anywhere in the States. So I broke down and ordered it from an Amazon vendor. For around $15 (including shipping from the UK), I got hours of amusement. I referred to "Naughty Kitty!" as a companion to "Silly Doggy!" because it's not really a sequel. It does not necessarily follow the last two pages of "Silly Doggy!" (I won't spoil it for anyone who has yet to read "Silly Doggy!"). The book opens with our little heroine coming back from the shelter (it might have been a pet store, but I think Lily's the kind of girl who would adopt and not buy) with a fluffy little kitten. She promptly puts him on the kitchen floor with a bowl of kitty food and leaves the room for a few minutes. When she comes back, the entire kitchen is a disaster -- the table is upturned; the refrigerator is wide open; and food is all over the counter, floor, and walls. As she cannot see the mysterious visitor, Lily blames Kitty. The whole day continues in this delightful manner with poor little Kitty getting the blame for everything. The illustrations are just as adorable and funny as in the first book, and Lily is just as wonderful a heroine as she was when she took her bear around town. I also really enjoy having the original British version of the book because the language is different. For instance, when Lily demands to know how Kitty "pinched all my sausages," we had to explain to the 3-year-old that "pinch" has a different meaning in other countries. I'm sure they'll Americanize the language if they ever do a printing here (and they should!), but it's fun to have the original. Makes me want to get an original version of "Silly Doggy!" as well. The dust cover has this to say: "Adam wrote _Naughty Kitty!_ for anyone who has been blamed for something they did not do. He sincerely hopes that one day something else they haven't done will bring them praise and riches!" Adam Stower deserves much praise and riches for his wonderful books. More, please!

My 4yr old granddaughter knows this series. Her mother suggested this book as a gift for her. She was very happy to read the book again, and seemed proud to own it.

My 3 year old daughter loves this book, and the one that came before it called Silly Doggy. She borrowed this from the library and didn't want to bring it back, so we ordered it to give her for Christmas. We have a niece who was just born so has the same name as the little girl in the story, so we bought a copy for her, too. This is a very cute story about a little girl named Lily who desperately wants a dog, but whose mother thinks dogs are too much trouble. So she gets Lily a kitten. Hilarity ensues when a tiger who has escaped from the zoo sneaks into the house and makes all sorts of mischief, but Lily never sees the tiger and assumes that the kitty has made all of the messes. The pictures and story are sweet and funny, and it holds up to numerous readings, which is always important from the parent side!

This follows the author's book "Silly Doggy", where the little girl finds a large bear in her back yard and mistakes it for the dog she has always wanted. After her attempts to train the 'dog', the zookeeper comes to take it away. On the last page of that book, the girl again goes out her back porch, sees something furry, throws her arms out and yells, "Kitty". This book is about her experience with 'kitty', the escaped tiger. I read and give away many children's books, and this was one of the funniest and most enjoyed by toddlers (along with "Mother Bruce".)

The story and illustrations are wonderful! My two year old loves this book. It's clever and sweet. In order to follow the narrative, you need to look at the illustrations - that's the fun part. I don't want to ruin the story but it's a great one! Just bought one for a friend's daughter who is turning 3.

We loved "Silly doggy" and this is a lovely sequel. My children who are 1 and 3 loved hunting for parts of the " naughty kitty" throughout the house and laughed non stop at all of the disasters! Wonderful illustrations which match the gentle humour. One of the best books we have read and a clear favorite in our house!

My 4 y/o daughter has this book memorized! Adorable.

Cute, but Not nearly as good as the first book (silly doggy... one of our favorites)!

Another great title from Adam Stower.

Great follow up to "silly doggy" my 4 year old loves this book and laughs hysterically every time i read it to her and pretend I can't quite believe such a little kitty could be so naughty! Beautiful and engaging illustrations really bring the characters to life. Would highly recommend.

A very popular read at my granddaughter bedtime!

"Emotionally counterbalancing the destruction, Stower's illustrations feature pleasant colors with mild, watery shadings and steady outlines; Lily has round cheeks, and even the tiger's stripes aren't too dramatically dark. Two surprises keep giggles coming-and don't skip the closing endpaper...Funny enough to create sincere longings for a hapless house cat and its large rampaging cousin." - Kirkus
