The Nasty Girl ( German : Das schreckliche Mädchen ) is a 1990 West German drama film based on the true story of Anna Rosmus . The original German title loosely translates as "The Terrible Girl."

The film was selected as the German entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 63rd Academy Awards , in which it was nominated for. [2]

A German high school student, Sonja ( Lena Stolze as a fictionalized version of Anna Rosmus ) wins an essay contest and goes on a trip to Paris. Martin Wegmus begins teaching physics at Sonja's school and one of Sonja's classmates falls in love with him. Almost by luck, Mr. Wegmus and Sonja kiss. The teacher promises to return for her. The next year, she enters the contest again. She chooses "My Town During the Third Reich" from the possible topics. Her research leads her to discover that her picture-perfect town had been intimately involved in the Third Reich and that nearly all of the city's prominent families were members of the Nazi party long before it came to power. As she digs further, local authorities stonewall her efforts.

Sonja persists and learns that there had been eight concentration camps in the area and that all the Jews were forced out of the town and had their property confiscated. Sonja marries Martin and the townsfolk think Sonja has dropped the issue of Nazi involvement. Sonja bears two daughters and studies history at the University. She resumes her research into the town's Nazi past and wins court cases granting her access to archives. She still has to employ trickery to get the information she wants. The townsfolks' hostility grows from verbal abuse, to death threats to physical assaults as they attempt to silence her with increasing desperation but nothing deters her. Her husband feels emasculated as he's forced to take care of the children. The family survives a bomb attack but Sonja keeps up her research. At the end, the townspeople change their tune, even putting a bust of Sonja at the town hall. Sonja sees this as a means to silence her and rejects the honor.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it
It may sound in outline like a bad joke, but this daring comedy about a young German girl's frustrated attempt to uncover the Nazi past is no laughing matter. The film has a lot of the same, sassy energy as its heroine, who as a schoolgirl began a lifelong investigative crusade to unearth the Nazi skeletons in the closet of her Bavarian hometown, discovering firsthand the hypocrisy and complacency of her friends and neighbors (and, by extension, of the entire German nation). The story is drawn from actual events, but the heavy stylization of the film takes (deliberately) some of the sting from the facts, by lending them an almost playful air of unreality sometimes unsuited to the subject. The approach takes a little getting used to, but it makes sense: in a country afflicted with retroactive amnesia, history itself can sometimes seem equally unreal. Altogether it's a fresh look at otherwise familiar material, with a sudden, unresolved ending offering plenty of food for thought.

Nasty Gal is the third studio album by American funk musician Betty Davis . It was released in 1975 on Island Records and was Davis' first album on a major label.

It failed commercially upon release, and after the failure of this album Island Records shelved her planned follow-up, Is It Love or Desire? , until 2009. Under pressure by the record company, Davis abandoned her music career altogether shortly after this album's release. [2] It was reissued on Light in the Attic Records in 2009 on CD, and again in 2018 on colored vinyl in conjunction with record club Vinyl Me, Please , [2] which has rekindled interest in the album by music critics and fans, generating favorable retrospective reviews.

After the underground success of her previous two records, Davis toured extensively with a backup band called "Funk House" that included Nicky Neal, Larry Johnson, Fred Mills, and Carlos Morales. Her tours were marked by her exuding sexuality. [2] When ABC acquired her previous label Just Sunshine and its parent distributor Blue Thumb Records , Island Records approached Davis with a buyout offer. After accepting, Davis started working on new material for an album. On Davis' previous two albums, she relied on a multitude of session musicians , but felt a close connection with Funk House, so she chose to record the album with them instead. [1]

Initial reviews for the album were unfavorable. Critics believed Davis' image eclipsed her actual talent. [1] Davis had plans to release a fourth album, Is It Love or Desire? , and even recorded a few tracks before being ultimately shelved by Island. These sessions, which had featured Herbie Hancock , Chuck Rainey , Alphonse Mouzon , among others, were released in 2009 by Light in the Attic . After becoming disillusioned with the music industry, Davis retired.

After Light in the Attic reissued Davis' discography, contemporary reviews cropped up and have been much more positive, often noting that the album displays potential wasted by Island Records' dismissal of Davis' music and style.
