Nashville Underwater: Record Flooding Causes Widespread Damage

NASHVILLE, TN — May 10, 2024 — Heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has led to catastrophic flooding across Nashville, submerging streets, damaging homes, and forcing emergency evacuations. The Cumberland River has overflowed its banks, reaching levels not seen since the historic 2010 floods, leaving parts of downtown and surrounding neighborhoods underwater.

Emergency Declarations and Evacuations

Mayor Freddie O’Connell declared a state of emergency early Friday morning, urging residents in low-lying areas to seek higher ground. Emergency crews have conducted dozens of water rescues, pulling stranded drivers from flooded roadways and assisting families trapped in their homes.

'This is a life-threatening situation,' said Chief John Smith of the Nashville Fire Department. 'We’re asking everyone to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.'

Infrastructure and Property Damage

Several major roads, including stretches of Interstate 24 and Briley Parkway, have been closed due to high water. The Metro Nashville Police Department reported multiple submerged vehicles, with some drivers needing rescue by boat.

Local businesses along the riverfront, including popular honky-tonks on Lower Broadway, have suffered significant water damage. The Grand Ole Opry House, still recovering from previous floods, is once again under threat as water levels continue to rise.

Community Response and Shelter Openings

Red Cross shelters have opened at several locations, including the Nashville Fairgrounds and local high schools, to assist displaced residents. Volunteers are distributing food, water, and emergency supplies.

'We’ve been through this before, but it never gets easier,' said longtime East Nashville resident Maria Gonzalez. 'We’re just trying to help each other out until the water goes down.'

More Rain Expected

The National Weather Service has issued additional flood warnings as more rain is forecast over the weekend. Governor Bill Lee has mobilized the Tennessee National Guard to assist with disaster response efforts.

Residents are encouraged to monitor emergency alerts and avoid floodwaters, which may contain hazardous debris and pose electrocution risks.
