Naomi Osaka Announces Comeback with New Foundation to Support Mental Health in Sports

Los Angeles, May 8, 2025 – Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has announced her highly anticipated return to professional tennis, alongside the launch of her new initiative, the PlayFree Foundation, dedicated to supporting athletes' mental health and well-being.

The 27-year-old former World No. 1, who stepped away from the sport in 2023 to focus on her mental health and personal growth, revealed her plans in an emotional Instagram post.

'I’ve spent the last two years learning, healing, and rediscovering my love for tennis,' Osaka wrote. 'But more importantly, I realized how much work still needs to be done to protect athletes' mental health. That’s why I’m coming back—not just to play, but to make a difference.'

A New Chapter On and Off the Court

Osaka’s return will begin with a wildcard entry at the 2025 US Open, where she last triumphed in 2020. Fans and fellow players have already expressed excitement over her comeback, with rival Coco Gauff tweeting, 'The tour isn’t the same without you. Welcome back, Naomi!'

Meanwhile, the PlayFree Foundation will partner with sports organizations to provide mental health resources, including licensed therapists for young athletes and advocacy for better psychological support in professional sports. The initiative builds on Osaka’s previous activism, including her decision to withdraw from the 2021 French Open to prioritize her mental well-being—a move that sparked global conversations about athlete pressures.

Osaka has not yet confirmed her full tournament schedule but hinted at a 'more balanced approach' to competition. She also revealed she’s been working on a memoir, set for release in early 2026.
