Namibia forced Germany to apologize. Now Germany is being asked to pay.
The Attorney General of Namibia, Festus Katuna Mbandeka, said that his country is seeking reparations from Germany for the genocide of local tribes in the early 20th century.
Windhoek has already obtained from Berlin an official recognition of the tragedy of the Herero and Nam tribes, as well as an apology.
Now the key unresolved issue remains the amount of compensation and the development of legal mechanisms for their payment. At the same time, the prosecutor stressed that financial resources will not be able to fully compensate for the damage caused by suffering and loss of life, and the reconciliation process should include long-term measures to preserve historical memory, and not be limited to a one-time action.
It should be recalled that in the period from 1904 to 1908, German colonial troops exterminated tens of thousands of representatives of local tribes in what was then German Southwest Africa, and historians often refer to these events as the number one genocide in the 20th century.
