I just love that Lunami bond of trust!!
Well, i won’t even deny it, this will be a LuNa post. Call it biased or whatever you want, idfc. :D
I noticed this little tendency with Nami’s character, while i was reading trough the manga, searching for nice panels for my LuNa interaction posts. Here goes.
Nami is a pretty affectionate person, when it comes to her friends. She shows both verbal and physical affection with ease.
She has no problem telling Usopp “i love you!” when she thanks him for making a weapon for her:
She has no problem to agree when Sanji asks her if she loves him
Physical affection is also not out of her comfort Zone:
She has no problem patting Zoro on the head and agreeing with his boasting, like a good friend
So yeah, we can clearly see that showing affection is Not a problem for her.
However, when it comes to Luffy, she acts differently. She avoids close physical contact with him unless it’s necessary/she has no choice. The most she manages is showing affection in less obvious ways like quietly putting his hat back on his head with a smile
Or putting her hand on his back when he’s upset
When they are in the same panel, Nami is often drawn being near him
My point is: Nami prefers being close to Luffy, but somewhat refrains from having physical contact with him, which would convey her affection towards him in an obvious manner.
And even the verbal part of communication is quite difficult for her. She only conveys it trough bragging about Luffy to Other people
Or talks about him affectionately when he’s not around. Some people think that she says all this because she is annoyed by him. But you see, if that was the case, she wouldn’t be smiling and laughing. (credits to my lovely friend Mimi in OJ community, who was kind enough to put my thoughts into words)
She cries for him and yet when someone points it out, she gets defensive
Are very important in the development of their bond. Nami is finally showing her feelings trough actual physical contact with Luffy
Now all we have to wait for is for Luffy to reciprocate that contact and show it from his own side :)
Our common friend noted something interesting regarding the Weatheria speech, something that some shippers and even producers missed. A contrast:
While Nami left many complains about Luffy’s poor knowledge about the sea or his lacking sense of danger, what we got to see from feelings and thoughts during that speech were something different. She remembered the first time Luffy was her emotional anchor, when he personally provided her with hope and comfort with a highly meaningful gesture
