For generations, a child might reasonably believe that they were somehow lesser than their peers should they be born with red hair. Now, the fightback has begun. In truth, redheaded women have been idolised for a while, the perceived connotations of red hair with danger and sexual liberation proving a winning combination for more enlightened times. And now Red Hot 2, the second Red Hot Project arrives in London, a collaboration between photographer Thomas Knights and British designer Elliott James Frieze, highlighting some of the hottest and fittest red haired men in the world.
Originally launched with a view of challenging the stereotypical image of the redheaded male Red Hot has become a global phenomenon, with exhibitions in London, New York, Amsterdam, Sydney and Berlin. The project began as a Kickstarter, and raised nearly £40,000. This is not some niche exhibition but rather a red revolution. Now a 2017 calendar has been launched, featuring 12 redheaded men proudly, and tastefully, naked. It’s on sale internationally, and as you can see from the photos, it’s going to be huge.
Photographer Thomas Knights and designer Elliott James Frieze have been vocal in their desire to further bury the ancient stigma by celebrating the redheaded male in all his naked glory. With bodies seemingly carved out of marble, all twelve models featured in the 2017 calendar resemble nothing less than auburn deities. We believe the correct term is “phwoar.”
Want more? A deluxe coffee book featuring over 60 photographs of the models (both male and female), and personal meditations on their redheadedness, can be ordered via the Red Hot website . The launch party is this Friday at the Devonshire Club, with £5 securing entry. It’s gonna be good. Both calendar and book would make a fine Christmas present - especially for anyone stupid enough to still sees ginger as an insult. After three pages they’ll be Googling red hair dye.
One final point. All money raised by the project - be it book, sale or ticket - is donated to anti-bullying charity The Diana Award . So not only can you enjoy some of the most beautiful people in the world on your wall and/or coffee table, you’d be doing a good deed as well.
You might not know it but 20 October is Kick-A-Ginger Day. There’s a website and everything (take our word for it). On orange masthead is offered the reassurance, “Kick-a-ginger-day is not a serious event. It's a joke which originated from South Park. Don't kick anyone, we love gingers!” The last three words may not quite match the “some of my best friends are black” line for disingenuity but one can certainly detect an echo.
Yet as well as being woefully misjudged, Kick-A-Ginger Day isn’t even original: redheads have endured discrimination for millennia. Perhaps most damaging was the notion, particularly prevalent in medieval times, that Judas Iscariot had red hair. Numerous paintings depict Christ’s betrayer with crimson locks, and even Shakespeare refers Orlando in As You Like It as: "His very hair is of the dissembling colour, something browner than Judas." (Basically; he’s not quite a ginger but he’s as dishonest as one.) Once your hair colour is blamed for the death of Jesus, life will be a battle.
Redhead persecution transcends culture. In The Golden Bough (1890), anthropologist James Frazer notes: "With regard to the ancient Egyptians we have it on the authority of Manetho that they used to burn red-haired men and scatter their ashes with winnowing fans.” In the 4th century, St Jerome advised a Roman mother on her daughter: “Do not dye her hair red, and thereby presage for her the fires of hell.”
Medieval German book Malleus Maleficarum reminds us: “Those whose hair is red, of a certain peculiar shade, are unmistakably vampires.” Clearly this idea stuck: over the next couple of centuries, at the height of the witch hunt craze, thousands of redheaded women were burned at the stake.
And so into modern times, with Victorian novelist Wilkie Collins describes a character as having “the one unpardonable, remarkable shade of colour which the prejudice of the northern nations never entirely forgives — it was red”. Sherman of American Pie is presented as the ultimate geek. Although he gets the girl, that in itself is a punchline.
Perhaps most alarmingly, in 2009 Tesco released a Christmas card showing a redheaded boy with Father Christmas and the message: "Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones". The card was swiftly withdrawn after public outcry, but the fact remains a major supermarket chain thought it amusing to use "ginger" as a punchline. With the Red Hot 100 project, we're glad to a turning point against this pointless prejudice.

Toned, handsome, and all very naked, meet the group of muscular men set to feature in the 'world's first' nude calendar solely devoted to red-haired models.
The makers of 2017 Red Hot Exposed - which features models selected from around the world - claim it is the 'world's first ever nude ginger calendar', with each of the 12 participants chosen not only because of their remarkable good looks, but because of their flame-red locks.
Posing in a series of risque images, the models are pictured doing athletic poses in front of a dark backdrop, which helps to highlight their bright red hair.

The annual calendar, created by London-based photographer Thomas Knights, 32, and designer and creative director Elliott James Frieze, 36, from Cardiff, Wales, aims to showcase 'fair and untanned skin, freckles and black and mixed race redheads'.
Thomas told Daily Mail Online: 'Exposed is our first ever nude calendar - tastefully shot of course.
'It's officially the world's first ever nude ginger calendar.'
Proceeds from the 2017 calendar will be donated to the Diana Award, which was created in honor of the late Princess Diana.
Thomas said he hopes the calendar, which is on sale internationally, will be 'huge' and raise 'loads of money' for charity.

Models featured in next year's calendar include Lukas Bo for January, Scott Henry for February, Tom Peers for March, Mike Del Moro for April, Robin Van Der Krogt for May and Daniel Newman for June.
Daniel, who is currently starring in television show The Walking Dead, is also the cover star of the calendar.
The second half of the year stars Joseph Merry for July, Philippe Horowicz for August, Jonathan Wrynne for September, Seth Fornea for October, Corbin Furstenburg for November, Tommy Brady for December.
Last month, Thomas and Elliott unveiled Red Hot II, an exhibition dedicated to red-haired figures that was inspired by the sculpture of Ancient Greece.

'Red Hot II is about celebrating difference. Championing an alternative view of beauty, currently saturated with sun-kissed images of models.
'It’s empowering - owning socially perceived flaws and being comfortable in your own skin,' said Thomas.
Earlier this year, Daily Mail Online reported that Thomas originally launched the Red Hot project in a bid to 're-brand the ginger male stereotype'.
In just a few years, he has since created a book, Red Hot 100, put on exhibitions in cities around the world - including New York - and created a calendar celebrating people with red hair.
