THE LIE about pornography is that it is about a healthy love for human sexuality. The body beautiful. The miracle of flesh.
Ha. The Internet publication of nude photos of radio talk-show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger shows what a lie that pretense is. The photos were taken 23 years ago by an one-time lover and present-day louse, Bill Ballance, who sold the photos against Schlessinger's wishes for "tens of thousands of dollars."
But most browsers aren't signing onto Web sites to appreciate Schlessinger's curves or her taut stomach or saucy smile. They are signing on so that they can give her the once over, then sneer.
They will look at her body so that they can feel they are better than she is. She after all will be naked, and they will be safe in their clothes.
Of course, Schlessinger gawkers will hide behind some better reason for gazing at photos she went to court to try -- but fail -- to keep from public display. They will pose as if they are on an Internet field trip, an exercise made intellectual because Schlessinger is guilty of the worst sin in modern America -- hypocrisy.
You see, Schlessinger now advocates abstinence outside of marriage -- which puts her in an unpopular minority. Many who disagree with her, as I do, however, can't simply disagree with her, and figure it's a free country, she has a right to be wrong. (Not to mention all the right things she says, as in her attacks on "sperm donors.") No, they must ridicule her, humiliate her -- punish her, given the chance -- for her old-fashioned notions.
Since Ballance was not Schlessinger's spouse when he took the pictures, they now tut-tut that Schlessinger is a hypocrite. She's not a woman who changed her mind over time. She can't be someone who, like many parents, turned away from the if-it-feels-good-do-it mantra of her youth. She advocates abstinence, that's not growth within the allowable limits, and that makes her fair game.
Does that make parents who used drugs, but tell their kids not to, hypocrites, not people who matured? Or does abstinence advocacy automatically strip proponents of their privacy?
The fact that Schlessinger once wasn't as pure as she is today somehow is supposed to negate what she espouses. Actually the pics are irrelevant -- but that admission robs people of an excuse to peek for sociological reasons.
Meanwhile, it shows a sense of insecurity among those who are not abstinence- boosters that many feel that Laura in the Buff changes anything -- that it has any effect on the lack of validity of her argument.
"I am mystified as to why, 23 years later, this 80-year-old man would do such a morally reprehensible thing,' Schlessinger told listeners on the air last week.
No mystery there, doc. As the Los Angeles Times reported, Ballance said he sold the photos because he felt "minimized" by Schlessinger. He's a has-been, she's a bigger star than he could ever dream of being. So he decided to take her down a notch.
And millions of Americans have decided to get in line with Ballance. It's a gang peep. Jealousy and misogyny can make a perfect, nasty marriage.
Envious radio personalities have announced where people can click on to her nude body. In their holier-than-Laura tones they say they are doing this because she acts holier-than-thou.
What a joke. She is not just a believer in virtue, she is also the most successful woman in radio. Seeing Schlessinger naked gives these men a power over her that they'll never have in real life.
