THE Sept. 11 terror attacks destroyed lives, careers and a nation’s psyche – and convinced “ Naked News” anchor Victoria Sinclair that she needed a sabbatical from reporting the news in her birthday suit.
Sinclair decided to get her priorities in order before returning to the show this week after a year off.
“It was a little much,” Sinclair told The Post of her mood in the days after the Twin Towers fell. “I didn’t feel that I was able to do a good job anymore.
“Every time that I did this and reported the news, I was having difficulty separating myself from it, the way reporters are supposed to do.
“It just made me sadder and sadder.”
“Naked News” is the Internet-turned pay-per-view show in which women disrobe while anchoring a newscast that covers topical events and entertainment.
Sinclair, the show’s first anchor, returned this week from more than a year of soul-searching, gardening and religious study.
Today, Sinclair, a 35-year-old businesswoman, is back giving the international news report, starting out fully dressed before shedding her clothes nonchalantly throughout the newscast until she’s totally naked.
But in the days after 9/11, she began to find it difficult to deliver the news in the “tongue-in-cheeks” style her telecast required.
“People like Conan O’Brien and David Letterman were having a lot of difficulty running their shows with the normal frivolity that they normally demand,” Sinclair said.
“And I, too, was having the same difficulty.”
Feeling depressed and burned out, Sinclair quit the broadcast and spent the next year living in her vacation house outside of Toronto.
The former event planner spent the first few months away from the cameras with the TV and radio off. Later, Sinclair began to explore religion; to try, from a Westerner’s point of view, to understand why Muslim extremists had so much rage for her culture.
“I did a lot of self-directed studying, mostly through reading,” she said. “Admittedly, I didn’t know a lot about the Muslim faith. But I read a book called ‘Nine Parts of Desire’ by Geraldine Brooks.”
The book follows Brooks and her experiences with women in Muslim countries.
“It was quite illuminating,” said Sinclair. “As a Western woman, you assume that these women are completely repressed and suppressed, and I still believe that they are – but there’s so much more to it than that. That’s a very superficial attitude, I found.”
By the end of the summer, Sinclair decided that it was about time to return to her old life.
“I just felt like it was time to immerse myself back in society,” she said.
After a flurry of phone calls earlier this fall, Sinclair is back on the air – taking it all off.
