Stepping away from single malts for a second, we’re diving into a blended malt scotch whisky review: the Naked Grouse Blended Malt. A tasty whisky that features Highland Park and Macallan blended with other malts like Glenrothes and Glenturret – all aged in first-fill ex-Oloroso casks. I dare say it’s not only one of the best deals in Scotch right now, but also better than some of its individual parts.
That’s a pretty bold statement, I know, but I haven’t been too enthused with the latest releases of Highland Park 12 or Macallan 12; neither one is really hitting the strides they used to. As for Glenturret and Glenrothes… well… I’ve never been a big Glenrothes fan and this exceeds nearly every one I’ve had. Glenturret I’ve had a few here and there, but nothing that’s ever made me purposefully seek them out – hence the statement above.
I enjoy this whisky and I hope that when Edrington sold Glenturret to Art & Terroir they were able to write in some stipulations about getting access to barrels to keep this brand going without having to dramatically change it. They also sold off Cutty Sark to La Martiniquaise at the same time, so who knows what’s going to happen with that one. But for now they’re holding on to all the Grouse brands so I’m hoping they can keep this going and keep it tasty. Anyways, time to drink!
Convention said Blended Malt matured and got its flavour from pre-used Bourbon casks. This got us thinking, what if instead we used first-fill sherry casks to add another layer of rich and fruity flavour to our unique blend of single malts? These are casks that have never held whisky, Naked Casks we call them. This liberating leap into the unknown didn’t just work, it was a joyful exuberance of flavour that changed the possibilities of whisky enjoyment! – Famous Grouse
Blend: Multiple (Highland Park, Glenturret, Macallan and Glenrothes known)
Mash Bill: 100% Malted Barley
Cask: First Fill ex-Sherry
Age: NAS (3+ years)
ABV: 43%
NOSE
Sherry, vanilla frosting, malt, citrus, oily nuts and fresh pancakes with a touch of spice.
PALATE
Sherry, dried dark fruit, x-mas spice, vanilla taffy, citrus and macadamia nuts.
FINISH
Medium -> Vanilla, malt, nuts and sherry sweet.
BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Great balance, medium body and a light, not watery, feel.
Aroma holds little pockets of spice that pop up alongside the warm sherry notes of dark fruit, nuts and vanilla frosting; Palate pulls in some heavier nutty notes but it stays along the same nicely sherried lines of the aroma; Finish is a nice easy fade of the key fruity-nutty-sherry notes running from nose to palate.
The Naked Grouse Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is just plan good. It’s sippable, it’s mixable, it’s not too sweet and has a nice profile veteran drinkers can easily enjoy yet it’s 100% approachable for those venturing into the world of Scotch. It’s not incredibly complex, but what’s there is delivered with a warming richness that far exceeds expectations. I love it.
Naked Grouse Blended Malt Review $30
This is not a good cheap Scotch, it’s a good Scotch that happens to be cheap. There is so much going on, without being overwhelming, it’s a delight for the senses and is at the top of the Scotch pile in its price range… and maybe even a level above.
This was surprisingly good for the price, I was skeptical seeing it for only $30. It’s well rounded, the sherry is present but not what I sometimes find in sherry bombs cloyingly so and although it’s not mentioned in the review it should bed noted that there is a subtle smokiness that balances well with the sherry, too often those two profiles are exclusive of each other, sans Highland Park.
Thanks for sharing Jason, loved reading it. I don’t get any smoke on it, but everyone’s a bit more sensitive to different notes. Cheers man!
I put this and a bottle of Glendronach 12yo in a blind taste contest. The Glendronach is the better of the two, but it is also double in price! What’s more, I am surprised about how close they are in taste. I bought a case of the Naked Grouse right away. Come to think of it, I am going to stock up. Once people notice the Naked Grouse, it isn’t going to stay at the sub-$30 price. Stock up now before it is in the $40’s or even $50’s.
That’s awesome. I was planning on doing that after the pandemic, so thanks for doing it for me and sharing the results. It’s such an underrated whisky and I agree. I hope it never really catches on so we can keep enjoying it at this level. Cheers Eddie!
I honestly don’t think I have ever tasted a warmer, richer, more ‘fruity’ scotch than this. It is a beautiful easy drink. I could savour this all day long and for the price I have paid (under £20 a bottle) I don’t think it can be beaten. First class!
I completely agree with you Josh. Monkey Shoulder had been my go-to inexpensive good basic scotch, but now I prefer Naked Grouse. It’s simply terrific. I love Macallan 12 Sherry Aged, and this is like an entry level (gateway ?) version. Hope they dont change it. Really good product at a great price, even if I have to buy it at a state ABC store.
I hope they don’t change it at all either. It’s perfect as is! Cheers Caymus!
Hey Josh, I was looking at either purchasing Naked Grouse or Monkey Shoulder for my next bottle… any advice? They both seem pretty solid at the price point based on your reviews.
I’d definitely recommend the Naked Grouse! It’s just crazy good, especially for the price. Cheers!
Based on this review I picked up a bottle of this today. It reminds me very much of Stranahan’s Sherry Finish. What a value! Thanks for the tip.
That’s a great comparison I didn’t even think of but yeah, now that I do, they have a ton in common in their profile. Glad I didn’t steer ya wrong Troy, cheers!

The Naked Grouse blended malt whisky review
The Naked Grouse is a blended malt whisky from The Famous Grouse brand by The Edrington Group. The malts are from Highland Park and Macallan, matured in first-fill Sherry casks. It has a higher proportion of above-mentioned malts, than in the standard, blended malt and grain whisky, because this one has no grains. The bottle is both beautiful and clever, showcasing the grouse etched on the glass.
This vatted malt whisky is pretty good. Overall, an okay dram from the famous Scottish brand. Needs lots of time in the glass to develop. Starts of stingy and with strong marzipan notes, which I always detest. But in the end, turns out just fine.
Bang for the buck dram. Partly rich, occasionally hard to understand. Like jazz music can be. That’s why I’ll call this grouse Bird, in honor of the movie by Clint Eastwood.
Nose: Starts with marzipan dominating. Develops into a mix of malt, vanilla and milk with plums. Even toffee rises from the back.
Taste: Lot of sherry influence with hints of toffee. Bitter raspberry jam, spices and buttery caramel.
Finish: Oak, dark orange chocolate and oil.
Balance: Not bad at all, an okay showing from The Famous Grouse brand. Has a lot of potential – with more consistency, for example a richer nose and strong finish, it would’ve been a greater whisky.
