Fresh-faced and delicate, Esme, from Oldham in Manchester, might be barely 15 years old but to many in the Roma gypsy community, she's a catch.
Originally from Hungary, she is just one of the estimated 250,000 Romany gypsies to relocate to the UK from Eastern Europe over the last decade.
But with the influx of people has come their traditions - including the custom of marrying off girls and boys once they reach the age of 13.

Luckily for Esme, that won't be her fate. ' Today girls and boys are equal,' insists her grandmother. 'If she marries at 15 and has many children, she won’t have a life .
'I’m in love with Romany Gypsy culture, We have beautiful traditions. But the early marriage custom is no good. It needs to be changed.'
Not every gypsy thinks this way however, and Esme's older sister was herself married off aged 14 to a man in Hungary two years ago.
While the legal age for marriage in Hungary is 16, the authorities often turn a blind eye. Under the traditional Pachiv Gypsy code, families must pay a bride price for the girls - often of up to £5,000.
But with many unable to afford so much, girls can change hands for as little as £3,000. Either way, in the UK, youthful marriage often brings unwanted attention from the police.
One man to fall prey to the authorities' crackdown on gypsy marriage in the UK is Huko, an unemployed father of two who lives in Rotherham in Yorkshire.

Huko, who moved to the UK a year ago, is yet to find a steady job, or indeed, claim benefits as so far, the local council has turned down his application.
'There's no job, nothing,' he complains. 'What can we do? If I steal, there’s food, if not there’s nothing. If we go stealing, the police arrest us.' Incongruously, he adds: 'The wise never work. '
With Huko and his family live his nephew, 23, his wife Maria, 14, and his 27-year-old niece Kivek, who was married off herself at 13 and, in consequence, has never been to school.
'I don’t know how to read and to write,' she reveals. 'I’m 27 and without school, without work, without anything.
'I got married when I was 13. Since I was 13, I've had to look after myself. Begging around people for £1, £2... for one euro to buy food and stuff to live .'
Not, however, that has put her off marrying young as is traditional under the traditional Gypsy Code, which is known as Pachiv. 'When you're 11 or 12, when you're married you get responsibilities,' she continues.
'You have to make a responsibility, you're working. You have to make your own life, make your own house, make your own child. You have to grow them up. That's when you get married.'
The police, however, take a dim view of this approach and have paid frequent visits to Huko's home in search of 14-year-old Maria.

Maria, who is in an illegal gypsy marriage with Huko's nephew, came to the attention of social workers after being seen by a GP.
Were social workers to discover the truth about Maria's marital status, that could cause problems for Kivek and Huko and as a result, they lie to the police whenever they visit.
' We lied because we didn't want to tell the truth,' says Kivek. 'It's because she's fourteen, she's pregnant.
'She has a husband here. She left her mum in Spain. She lives here but we said to them she doesn’t live here. It's because If they find her they'll take her.'
Take her, they eventually do - much to the horror of Huko and Maria's mother Nadia. 'He had my daughter taken into care,' she fumes, blaming Huko for what happened.
'I will cut his nose off, I will take his eyes out. I regret with all my heart that I had to come here .'
Nevertheless, she too is happy to see her daughter married to a much older man. 'I got married at 13 and had a baby at 15,' she explains. 'These are our rules.'

Following rigorous competition and more than 130,000 voters, the World’s Most Beautiful Vagina Contest anointed a champion this week. It was a strange, difficult-to-gauge event—but that’s why organizers turned to scientists to tell us what it all means.
U.K. resident Nell, 27, won first place and $5,000 in the pageant with a vulva beauty ranking of 7.7 out of 10. Jenny, 23, of Bavaria, Germany, took second place with a 7.3; and Anita, 20, from Hungary, came in third. They each earned $2,500 and $1,250, respectively.
The contest was sponsored by Brian Sloan, who is also the manufacturer of the Autoblow 2 . It’s known as “the first truly realistic alternative to traditional pleasure products for men,” according to the its website .
These winners will also be flown out to Los Angeles, where their vulvas will be 3D-scanned to later be reproduced for the Autoblow device.
Sloan contracted a group of data scientists to analyze the contest’s findings for their scientific implications. The data was then compiled in “ The Vulva Paper .”

The Vulva Paper’s website says scientists “used the contest data to assess the diversity in vulval morphology and voters’ preference for different morphologies.” A total of 182 women participated in the contest; 110 entries were examined for the study (if measurements could not be taken from the photo, the entry was not considered).
The scientists viewed each entry on a 15-inch computer screen, zooming in “until the genitalia were easily measured using a screen ruler,” read the paper .
They measured labia majora length, labia minora length, and clitoral hood length.
Finally, the scientists rated the complexity of the labia minora; they used the three categories of rugosity (smooth, moderate, marked) to do so. To prevent vaginal bias, the same person also conducted all of these measurements. The scientists later used this research to classify the contest’s entries into six different categories of “vulval morphology.”

As far as methodology is concerned, a random assortment of entries was sent to each voter, who was then asked to rate the vulva pictured on a scale from 1 to 10. These voters were only able to rank one photo at a time, but could also vote on an unlimited number of entries. The scientists compiled 2,766,671 ratings from 134,707 contest voters.
“To reduce individual biases, we centered each voter’s ratings using their mean and standard deviation. This allowed us to reflect the preferences of voters on the same scale,” read the study .
According to the paper , each voter rated 21 photos, on average. Each vulva also received 15,285 votes, on average.
The study also found that “roughly 51% of voters preferred the first two classes of non-protruding, simple labia. The other 49% favored the four more complex vulva classes.”
“As expected from the rankings that we saw at the country and local levels, Class 1 vulvas are preferred over the others more often. But the combined percentages of voters who preferred more complex classes of vulvas far outweighed those who preferred the simplest style.”
The winners’ photos, however, were not included in the study—having been among the participants whose photos were not able to be considered. Moreover, the “doggy style” posture featured in these entries made it difficult for the scientists to complete the necessary measurements.
“Indeed, pictures depicting contest entrants in a doggy style position obtained ratings 2 points higher on average (p <0.001) than others. Other features, like piercings in the clitoral hood, didn’t affect the ratings,” read the study .
So basically, the “doggy style” photos generated “influential excitement” among the contest’s voters—an important competitive advantage for all future entrants to consider.

An Australian model who was born with a penis and vagina has kickstarted a modelling career despite being bullied mercilessly at school.
Sophia Young, born in Nowra on the south coast of NSW, was only eight-years-old when she started feeling pain in her pelvic area, and doctors soon discovered her ovaries were positioned abnormally, with one being much higher than the other.
As she got older, both reproductive organs developed, but her penis became so large that her parents stopped raising her as a girl, and changed her name to Harrison.

'I want to get rid of all the male parts so I can have a sense of normality'
'I have a vagina, uterus and ovaries, but my clitoris is so oversized it looked like a penis. You can't tell what it is, but it has no function and I can't have kids,' she told Daily Mail Australia.
'I want to get rid of all the male parts so I can have a sense of normality.'
Now 22, Ms Young hopes to earn enough money as a model to fund her genital correction surgery and is in the process of changing her legal name from Harrison to Sophia.
Before she entered the modelling industry, Ms Young, who was initially raised as a girl in the regional NSW city of Wagga Wagga, was constantly bullied, suspended 11 times and kicked out of various schools, before dropping out in Year 11.
