F lakka, a new designer drug popular in Florida, is continuing to generate bizarre incidents of naked rage and paranoia among users — but officials say it’s no laughing matter.
The synthetic drug has spawned a number of tales including how one Florida man believed he was Thor, and ran naked through a neighborhood and then tried to have sex with a tree, the Associated Press reported Thursday. Another flakka user ran nude down a busy city street, convinced he was being chased by a pack of German shepherds.
Flakka, which is similar to bath salts and usually smoked via electronic cigarettes, causes the naked incidents because it causes a spike in body temperature of up to 106 degrees, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Like amphetamines, flakka users seek the high of the drug’s stimulation but may also become prone to violent outbursts, paranoia and hallucinations.
“I’ve had one addict describe it as $5 insanity,” Don Maines, a drug treatment counselor in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., told AP. “They still want to try it because it’s so cheap.”
Flakka has spread to other states besides Florida, where most incidents have been reported, including Ohio, Texas and Tennessee, according to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Street drug 'flakka' is plaguing Australia's Gold Coast
SHOCKING footage has revealed the horrific effects of the £5 street drug 'flakka' which is plaguing Australia's Gold Coast.
Causing hallucinations, violent tendencies and paranoia, flakka - containing a stimulant called alpha-PVP - is often sold as MDMA, also known as ecstasy .
In harrowing video captured on police bodycams, the full extent of the drug's risks are made clear - with users acting in a similar way to those in footage which emerged from the United States .
In one clip, an 18-year-old girl can be seen writhing in the street and screaming - before officers were forced to sedate her and take her to hospital, according to Daily Mail Australia .
Meanwhile, other footage shows a 42-year-old man dressed in his underwear begging for help from the back seat of an Uber taxi.
Police believe the substance involved is 'flakka' - which has become widely used, recently leading to 16 hospitalisations in just one weekend in Australia .
Officers think the drug is being distributed by an organised gang - and have warned there is 'no safe way' to take such substances.
Kathleen Florian, assistant commissioner for the Queensland crime and corruption commission, told the Daily Mail: "A substance has become available which has acute hallucinogenic effects as well as causing considerable aggression.
"Whilst we don't know what that drug is at the moment, we do know the damage that drug is causing is considerable.
'We know from our intelligence that there are times of the year when drug use on the Gold Coast spikes, and we are heading into a period when that is relevant.
