It's a quiet Monday evening at a pub in Sydney's inner-west and there is about to be some nudity — but it's all in the name of art.
This will be only the second time Lulu has attended the life drawing group that meets at the Friend in Hand Pub in Glebe.
Although she had three years of modelling experience in art spaces, there was hesitation when she initially answered a call to pose at the licensed venue.
"I was nervous. I wasn't sure about where the class would be held," Lulu said.
"I was curious as to what kind of crowd it would bring and if that would affect my position as a model.
"It's a vulnerable position enough to be getting naked in front of a group of strangers and presenting yourself in that way, let alone people who have been drinking."
She soon discovered the sessions were held upstairs in a private function area away from other patrons; a white sheet obscures the view from the stairwell.
An artist herself, Lulu said the pastime encouraged improvised creativity which she felt a lot of people had difficulty with, not just in art, but in many aspects of their lives.
"I think life drawing is a really great portal to access that innocence, that lack of self judgment."
Remaining stationary in poses from one to 20 minutes at a time, she enjoys how the activity brings strangers together to interpret the naked human figure.
"We barely look at people that we don't know on the train, let alone draw them naked, so it's actually a gorgeous exchange.
"It sort of brings back this commonality that we all have which is a body ... by flaunting it, by sharing it and they're appreciating it by drawing it. I love it."
Geoffrey Goodes first came to the Glebe Life Drawing Group in search of an alternative venue to the overcrowded studio drawing session he previously attended.
He ended up staying and has facilitated the weekly meeting since he took over from the two men who established it — that was over a decade ago.
"I've been to a few different scenarios for life drawing, but a pub can offer a wider experience," he said.
"There's the possibility of alcohol which relaxes people a little bit.
"Having a little glass of wine while you're drawing is actually quite good for your drawing hand."
Mr Goodes said he easily found a variety of male and female models through his personal networks and social media, with some calling him to book sittings months in advance.
Over time he has witnessed a growth in the scene and said people of all ages and artistic backgrounds attended.
"Life drawing seems to be more popular than ever; nearly every suburb has some little group of life drawers somewhere."
Before the night's activities began, Robin Lawrence sat down with fellow artists for a ritual bistro meal.
She relished in the casual, relaxed setting and the friendly community the event brought together.
"There's nothing formal about it, it's not strict, it's easy-going and it's very Australian," she said.
In the early 1950s, enrolling at the age of 15, she studied fine arts at the National Art School in Darlinghurst.
Her passion propelled her to the Rudolf Steiner School in Manhattan where she held the role of head art teacher for almost two decades.
Returning to Australia she later established the Glebe Art Show and was awarded an OAM for her services to the arts in 2010.
Ms Lawrence has been attending the group for three years where she occasionally peeked over the shoulder of those behind the easels and sketch pads.
"You get a good, strong sense about the individuals and how they are approaching drawing a nude figure.
"That is always very revealing about how much that tells you about the person."
Ms Lawrence found the best models were those who were genuinely unselfconscious and tried not to take impossible poses.
She acknowledged the challenges of nude modelling, however, saying it was something she'd never attempted.
"Of course not, I'm far too uptight for that," she laughed.
