DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – A Florida woman who was reported missing on March 3 was rescued from a storm drain in Delray Beach on Tuesday, authorities said.
The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was found naked and trapped in a storm drain near the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Southwest 11th Avenue. Someone passing by heard her cries for help and called 911, officials said.
Firefighters responded and were able to remove the storm grate, lower down a ladder and lift the woman up to safety.
“She was unable to stand up,” Delray Beach Fire Rescue spokeswoman Dani Moschella told WPLG. “She didn’t have any clothes on. She was very dirty. She had some superficial wounds. Her knees were all scraped up.”
The woman told police that she went for a swim in a canal near her boyfriend’s house on March 3. While she was swimming, she came across a doorway near a shallow part of the canal. She entered the doorway and found a tunnel, which peaked her curiosity enough to enter. That tunnel lead to another tunnel and so on until she realized she was lost, she said.
The woman claimed she had been walking around the sewer system for about three weeks before finally seeing somewhere she could yell for help.
Police said the woman appeared “very lucid” during her conversation with detectives, and although police consider her rendition of events to be “unusual,” she did not meet the criteria for a Baker Act.
Police later learned that the woman has a history of mental illness and is a frequent user of illegal narcotics. She also reportedly admitted to doing odd things and making bad decisions when she is high on drugs.
“She was lucky,” Moschella said. “I don’t know how much longer she would have been okay down there. The idea that somebody might be down there for any length of time is disturbing. It’s dirty, dangerous, there’s snakes, rats, garbage, dirt and leaves, anything that’s on the street that washes into a sewer, and it smells terrible.”
Paramedics evaluated the woman before she was taken to Delray Medical Center. Her current condition was not disclosed.

A Las Vegas news anchor was arrested after being found naked and passed out in her car, police said.
Fox 5 Las Vegas morning weekday anchor and reporter Feven Kiflegiorgis was busted nude and asleep behind the wheel of her Audi at about 7:30 a.m. March 20, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported .
Kiflegiorgis, known as Feven Kay , told cops she didn’t remember how she got to the location where she was found.
Officers also reported the smell of alcohol emanating from the reporter, but she declined to submit to blood testing, according to the report.
Kiflegiorgis was later charged with reckless driving with a disregard for the safety of a person or property in the incident. She was ordered on April 21 to pay a $1,000 fine and to attend driving school, the newspaper reported.
The East Africa native, who grew up in California, noted her weeks-long absence from the station last week, video shows .
“Many of you noticed I’ve been off air for a few weeks,” Kiflegiorgis told viewers. “To all of you who have reached out, a sincere thank you for your concern.”
Kiflegiorgis said the incident was a “private matter,” but wanted to provide some transparency.
“Last month, I was arrested by Metro for driving under the influence,” she said. “At the time of the arrest, I was inside of a parking vehicle in a Las Vegas neighborhood alone.”
The charge was later reduced to misdemeanor reckless driving, Kiflegiorgis said.
“As I move forward, I want you to know I have learned from this and I will continue learning and I truly thank you for your support,” she said.
Kiflegiorgis started at Fox 5 in November 2018, according to her LinkedIn profile . She also previously worked at KTLA in Los Angeles as an assignment editor and as a news desk intern at TMZ in 2012, her profile shows.
Just three days before her arrest, the anchor shared a selfie on Instagram with her 15,000-plus followers while wearing a green floral print dress on St. Patrick’s Day.
“Can’t pinch this baby,” Kiflegiorgis wrote alongside a shamrock emoji.
Attempts to reach Kiflegiorgis early Thursday were unsuccessful.

MIAMI — The words “naked” and “Florida” have been used more than once over the years in headlines and sentences across multiple media outlets. This week it happened again.
Video recorded just before midnight Monday at the Miami International Airport baggage claim area shows a woman wearing only a bra and underwear while casually strutting her stuff.
But the unidentified woman doesn’t remain clothed for long, stripping off her skivvies in public, befuddling onlookers by her actions. It wasn’t long before she was completely naked roaming around the airport while appearing to sing.
Video later shows her on top of a police vehicle, still nude, outside the airport and later taken into custody.
CBS Miami reported she was an out-of-state resident, was incoherent, appeared to have psychological issues and would be involuntary committed via Florida's Baker Act.
