A lorry driver who knocked a Labour peer off his mobility scooter and killed him has avoided jail.
Lord Taylor of Blackburn was on a zebra crossing outside the House of Lords when a heavy goods vehicle crashed into him.
The 87-year-old great-grandfather who 'fought injustice all his life' suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital nine days later.

Former Nepalese Gurkha Kul Pandey, 56, from Feltham, West London, pleaded guilty to causing his death by careless driving.
He was handed 24 weeks in jail suspended for two years plus 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also disqualified from driving for three years.
Sentencing him at the Old Bailey, Judge Anuja Dhir QC said: 'The man you killed was Lord Taylor of Blackburn. He was 87 years old, an active member of the House of Lords and a family man.
'All road users should feel safe but those using a pedestrian crossing ought to feel completely protected because drivers should expect that people will be using them and should take particular care.
'The size of the vehicle you were driving and the weather conditions on that day should have meant that you were even more careful than you would normally be. You were not.'
Lord Taylor was taken to hospital after the collision on November 16, 2016, and died nine days later from pneumonia and traumatic brain injury.
Pandey was given 24 weeks in jail suspended for two years plus 200 hours of unpaid work
Pandey had overshot the give way line at a zebra crossing in a Mercedes Benz lorry encroaching onto the crossing.
As Lord Taylor was in front of the lorry, Pandey drove forward. Pandey told police he could not see the give way line because of the rain, the Old Bailey heard.
But if he had looked in his mirror properly and stopped at the give way line he would have had a clear view of the crossing and not have hit him, prosecutors said.
He had driven the lorry at 7am from Shepperton to Canning Town to make a delivery, arriving at 11.30am, and was returning when the collision unfolded at 6pm.
In a victim impact statement, Lord Taylor's son, Paul Taylor, said: 'My father had been involved in politics for as long as I can remember.
'He absolutely loved being involved in the everyday life of the House of Lords. He really loved to help people and fought injustice all his life.'
He said his mother died in 2015 and Lord Taylor spent his time between London and Lancashire.
Since the birth of Lord Taylor's great grandson in 2005 and great granddaughter in 2010, they had become 'even closer', Mr Taylor added.
His great grandson 'couldn't wait for his Pops to come back to Lancashire for the weekend', and had taken the death 'the hardest', the court heard.
Mr Taylor said: 'They spent hours chatting together about school and local history. He knows he won't be seeing him again.'
Lord Taylor's great granddaughter still has his picture as her iPad screensaver, he added.
Mr Taylor continued: 'She says as she has some of my Pop's genes, she can go into the House of Lords. The phone call of the accident came only 20 minutes before we were due to speak to him.
'As for myself, I can only describe that feeling as like reading a book, and then someone rips the last few pages out. He wasn't ill, and we had only spoken that morning.
'To say that I miss my father is an understatement. As a father, a grandfather and great grandfather, he will always be missed, and his death has had a great effect on his friends and colleagues, who still keep in touch with me.'
Charles Royle, prosecuting, said: 'Lord Taylor of Blackburn left the House of Lords on a mobility scooter he used. He crossed Millbank at a nearby zebra crossing.
'As he did so, a heavy goods vehicle driven by this defendant, Mr Pandey, which had been waiting at the zebra crossing moved forward and hit Lord Taylor, knocking him out of his scooter and causing head injuries that led to his death a few days later.'
The weather was 'dark and rainy', and a passenger in the lorry described it as 'appalling' and a 'four out of five', he told the court.
Mr Royce went on: 'The vehicle had stopped two-and-a-half meters past the give way sign for the pedestrian crossing. This meant the vehicle encroached into the area of the pedestrian crossing itself.
'The vehicle remained stationary for some 18 seconds. While it did so, several pedestrians crossed safely in front of it in both directions. Two seconds before the vehicle started to move, Lord Taylor started to cross the road.
'Whilst his mobility scooter was in front of the vehicle, and therefore beneath the windscreen, Mr Pandey started to move the vehicle.
'Lord Taylor and his mobility scooter was struck. And he was thrown from his scooter, sustaining injuries, which in due course led to his death.'
Pandey turned to his assistant, Maria Brown, and said 'I think I have hit someone, I think I have killed them', and stopped immediately.
Lord Taylor was taken to Kings College Hospital where medics found he had sustained severe head injuries including a haemorrhage. He was put in a critical care unit where he died nine days later having developed pneumonia.
In a police interview, Pandey said he found it hard to see the give way line at the pedestrian crossing 'because it was rainy'.
Mr Royle said: 'And that's why he had overshot it. He said that breaking was difficult because of the wet conditions, and because of the weight of the vehicle. Once he had seen the line, he wasn't able to stop until he had passed it.
'He said he had seen some pedestrians cross in front of him, and felt that the road was clear before he moved forward. He said that he had checked his mirrors before setting off.'
But an expert collision investigator found Pandey had stopped so close to the crossing he had encroached on to it, impairing his view of people using it.
Mr Royle said: 'Had Mr Pandey stopped at the give way line, as he should have done, he would have been able to see Lord Taylor as he began to cross directly through the wind screen.
'There's a mirror mounted on the wind screen which gives a clear view. Even in the position the lorry was stopped, Mr Pandey would have been able to see Lord Taylor in that mirror.'
He said it was the two errors - failing to stop in good time for the crossing in a 'busy and well used part of London', and failing to carry out proper checks of the safety mirror - which caused the collision.
Defending, Michael Rawlinson said Pandey was a 'proud hard-working man' who put his wife and 15-year-old son first.
He acknowledged the 'immeasurable' suffering and hurt of the Taylor family and said Pandey would live with the consequences of his actions every day.
Pandey was born into a poor family in Nepal and had come to Britain in 2010 to give his family a 'better life', he said.
The judge suspended his sentence on the defendant, who served for a decade in the Royal Gurhka Rifles, because of Pandey's 'genuine remorse' and the potential effect on his family.
Mr Rawlinson told the court that a 'former military man' watching the case in the public gallery had offered to pay any costs on behalf of Pandey.
In a statement released by the family of Lord Taylor of Blackburn, they said: 'The family of the late Lord Taylor would like to thank the Metropolitan Police for their help, kindness and compassion shown throughout the last 18 months.
'No feelings of hatred or loathing will turn the clock back. We all have to try to move on with our lives.'
