Nude Photos Of Jessica Mejia’s Dead Body Taken By Cook County Sheriff’s Department: Lawsuit
On New Year’s Eve of 2009, 20-year-old Jessica Mejia was killed in an apparent DUI car crash. Her boyfriend, Nick Sord, was driving at over three times the legal limit, according to authorities. Sord is still awaiting trial for aggravated drunk driving and reckless homicide.
The case took a bizarre twist last week, when Mejia’s family filed a lawsuit against the Cook County Sheriff’s Department alleging foul play on the part of some officers.
According to the suit, filed last Thursday by four members of the Mejia family, officers stripped Mejia’s body naked, with no medical justification and in plain view of oncoming traffic. They then took several photos of Mejia’s naked dead body on the side of the road, the suit alleges.
The Chicago Sun-Times, which broke the news of the lawsuit, reports that the family is seeking more than $200,000 for “severe and extreme distress.”
But, as the SouthtownStar reported today the sheriff’s department called the allegations “bizarre”...and false:
“From the moment our officers arrived upon the scene of this horrific crash one year ago, we have worked hard to provide justice to the family of the victim. While we’ve remained in contact with them, we’ve never before heard of the bizarre scenario this lawsuit describes,” Cook County sheriff’s department spokesman Steve Patterson said in a statement issued in response to the lawsuit.
“There were multiple independent witnesses on the scene that night and crime scene photographs taken which would have prevented the scenario described from happening. We’re sorry for the family’s loss,” he said.

Sord is due in court on January 20 of this year for the charges in the crash. The Mejia family has found support through organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, an Illinois-based group.
But the many questions surrounding the lawsuit — why it took so long to surface, what evidence the family has to suggest these pictures were taken — may not be answered for months, as the case moves slowly forward.
