Naked and Afraid 's 10th Season Premiere Will Feature a Same-Sex Twist

By now, everyone knows the formula for Naked and Afraid .
Two survivalists — a man and a woman — are stripped of all their clothes and dropped into a punishing location. There, they must brave the elements and survive for 21 days. They hunt for food, find fresh water, build shelters and try to work together as a team. As the show enters season 10, contestants generally know exactly what to expect out of their adventure.
For the season premiere airing on March 3, the long-running Discovery channel mixes things up — to the visible shock of the participants.
The two-hour episode has four survivalists — two men and two women. The men are marooned in one part of the jungle while women are dropped on a beach about three miles away. Neither pair is aware of the other pair’s existence — although we’re willing to bet that they will meet up at some point.
While the show’s spinoff, Naked and Afraid XL , has had same-sex teams, this is the first time that the flagship show tries it — and the participants’ surprise is evident. An exclusive clip is above.
“I hope my partner is good looking,” one of the unsuspecting men tells the camera as the adventure begins, “because I only like blondes, brunettes, redheads and chicks with dyed hair.” Seconds later, he meets his partner — another man.
When the two naked men meet up by a waterfall, they laugh nervously, while making a lot of comments about “chicks.” They shake hands. “No offense, but you’re the ugliest woman I’ve ever seen,” one of the participants says.
Three miles to the northeast, the women meet up. “I wasn’t expecting a female,” one of the survivalists says. While the women are clearly shocked at the show’s twist, they embrace before beginning the adventure.
The Discovery Channel tells PEOPLE that the 10th season is full of twists. Survivalists will be put into the most challenging locations to date — including the frozen tundra of Alaska, an alligator-infested swamp in Florida and an African Kill Zone where they are stalked by lions, dozens of crocodiles and a herd of 100 elephants.
This season also features Naked and Afraid ’s first threesome challenge (two girls and a guy) and the first couple to take on this challenge.
Naked and Afraid will premiere Sunday, March 3 (8 p.m. ET) on Discovery Channel.

This is the question the contestants appearing on the hit reality TV show, Naked and Afraid , have to face. With each expertly-edited episode chronicling the struggles of ambitious survivalists, the show sheds light on how much people can become reliant on the inventions of modern technology.
A recent episode charted Sam and Joe 's trials and tribulations. So, why didn't they get on?
A self-described "Gold Star lesbian," Sam explained that spending a considerable chunk of time with a buck-naked man was one aspect of the program she had reservations about in a trailer for Naked and Afraid .
"I haven't seen a naked dude before like ever in my life. How does that all work? [...] What if I, like, touch it?" Sam said.
Albeit less outgoing than Sam, Joe struck a chord with fans thanks to his laid-back personality and calm and collected approach. Joe reportedly joined the cast of Naked and Afraid because he wanted to meet his birth parents.
As a recent episode of Naked and Afraid revealed, Sam and Joe made for a bad match — which, in part, likely boiled down to Sam's relentless attempts to play mind games with the only person she could rely on in the Montana desert.
In an explosive trailer, Sam attempted to bully Joe into drinking more water — implying that his failure to do so would serve as proof of his supposedly reckless and self-destructive nature. Joe tried to nip the onsetting argument in the bud, but, ultimately, he failed to do so.
"Nothing out here takes more priority than water. [...] When you went hiking you were gone all day. What if this would have happened? I wouldn’t be able to help you. And then what?" Sam tried to lecture Joe. "You don't know how dehydration works, that's not how it works. Once you hit the point where you’re on the ground, you are hours away from things starting to shut down. Like, Joe, you can die."
"Stop being stubborn. You need to drink. If you don’t drink, I’m not bringing you water anymore. I'll let you f------ die. I'm over it, Joe," she said.
Joe tried to maneuver his way around the sensitive situation — but Sam turned out to be far more powerful. Although he eventually told her that she was right, Sam found this dissatisfactory.
In a confessional, she went on to explain that she is merely trying to look after Joe — which some Naked and Afraid fans would likely describe as a somewhat jaded interpretation of events.
Many have taken it to Twitter to congratulate Joe for having the inner strength to survive the adverse weather conditions and Sam's frequent outbursts of anger.

'Naked And Afraid' contestants bare it all for the cameras, and after they stop rolling, many of them continue to bare it all, figuratively speaking.
After 14 successful seasons and 120 episodes, the survival reality series Naked and Afraid has undoubtedly amassed a cult following. The show puts viewers on the edge of their seats as they follow two strangers who are dropped off in extreme environments, with no clothes, no food, and no water, as they try to survive the harsh conditions. The participants are paired male to female, with each contestant getting only one survival item.
Indeed, the Discovery Channel show is nothing like we have seen before, as the participants are made to survive on their own for 21 days, fully aware that their only reward is their pride and sense of accomplishment. However, despite the daunting experiences witnessed on-screen, many former contestants have come out after the show to spill some tea on the integrity of how much "reality" this show brings to its viewers.
Updated on April 21, 2022: The Discovery Channel hit Naked and Afraid is still going strong to this day, with the fourteenth season having premiered in winter 2022. Millions of fans continue to tune in each week to watch contestants attempt to survive in the wilderness for three weeks – all while completely naked (the contestants that is, not the fans). The show has also spawned a spinoff, Naked and Afraid XL, which is also still running today after 7 seasons and 55 episodes.
A particular popular contestant from the most recent season, Charlene “Cheeny” Plante, has been making headlines for her surprising comments during the show. In one episode, after getting a fishing hook lodged into her thumb, she proclaimed, "This is nothing new to me."
Many fans have wondered how possible it is for contestants to be naked and not be involved sexually. During an interview with People Magazine , Hall and Nodar confirmed that there weren't any hookups on the island. In Hall's words
"You're dirty, you're hungry, and you're tired. Sex is really the last thing on your mind. So there were no hookups involving me. Maybe there are others that I'll see when I watch the show."
Nodar also added that "the show isn't all about sex" and joked that the show didn't at all help his dating life. Clearly, man's instincts are buried deep in survival first, ahead of any other thing.
Usually, contestants are only allowed to bring one item to the show. But Bowen, a former participant, confessed that she, alongside her partner, brought more than one item each. Her partner came on board with four knives while she came along with a water filter and three knives. There was an objection from the production crew about her water filter, and they offered her a fire starter as a replacement instead.
Fans may recall that on the show Brothers suffered from food poisoning and fell ill after drinking dirty water. However, that was not the case. When Brothers left the show, she revealed that she suffered food poisoning thanks to one of the crew members . She recalled:
"I told one of the Indian men who was a part of the crew that I had been eating only granola bars because I was afraid of getting sick from eating unsanitary food. He said that I needed to eat protein, and he made this really great chicken curry dish. Three hours after I went to bed, I woke up sick, sick, sick."
As a matter of concern, viewers of the show would constantly think about how female participants deal with certain hygiene issues while out in the wild. Well, as it turns out, they get some help from the show's producers. In an interview, former contestant Stacey Lee Osorio revealed:
"Yea, you pretty much just wear a tampon and try to be as discreet as possible. It's pretty uncomfortable and gross, but at least we get that one luxury. Thanks, Naked and Afraid."
It appears a lot more exciting things might be going on behind the scenes, but viewers don't get to see all the details of contestants' works. In a Reddit post by one of the former contestants, Teal, she pointed out that she made a 40ft ladder and a fishing net, among other things. However, they weren't featured on the show.
Since leaving the show, Bowen has put Naked And Afraid on blast about her time on the show. One of her shocking confessions revealed that some contestants were allowed to use drugs or supplements. In an interview, she claimed that her partner Matt was allowed to take Adderall, but the producer claimed that the prescription was fake. However, she was denied her medication of salts and potassium for a kidney issue while on the show.
The cast of Naked And Afraid is often portrayed as people who feel no insecurities about their bodies and are absolutely comfortable showing them off. However, that's not always the case. Contestants Alyssa Ballestero and Osorio spoke to People Magazine about the body image issues they faced. Ballestero said:
"I know this sounds ridiculous, but I'm a pretty shy person. I don't just take off my clothes for any reason. It was awkward, and the crew was like, "Oh, don't worry. We've seen it all before.' and I'm thinking, 'Yeah, but you haven't seen me before!'"
In a post, Braverman, a former contestant, admitted that the first day of the show was usually staged.
According to her, she took off her clothes twice to get shots from different angles and followed a script that instructed her to go to a landmark, meet her partner and say whatever joke or earnest greeting they rehearsed. After that, they were given their sacks which disguised their microphone transmitters and a cartoonish map.
This isn't to say that all of the show was staged in one way or the other. She also recalled how they were left entirely alone with cameras and how she and her partner used handheld cameras to record their experiences of being surrounded by hyenas in the middle of the night.

People always have a lot of questions about Naked and Afraid .
Here at PEOPLE, we feel like it’s our public duty to answer some of these burning questions. Let’s begin with the lightning round:
Where do they go to bathroom? (Anywhere they want. It’s the jungle.) Are they really left alone? (Yes. Each night, production goes to base camp, leaving the participants alone with a diary camera.) Do they get paid? (Yes, but just a few thousand dollars. It’s all about the experience, not the cash.)
With those questions out of the way, let’s move on to certain gender-specific questions that the female survivalists often get. To help us out, PEOPLE asked this season’s Naked and Afraid XL participants Alyssa Ballestero and Stacey Lee Osorio to weigh in on these (sometimes very delicate) questions.
