Being dropped off in nature to survive with a complete stranger is awkward enough, but being naked the whole time makes for some cringy moments.
In a TV series where two strangers are forced to survive a harsh environment together, there are bound to be awkward and cringy moments as the two — often opposite — personalities try to work together to survive in nature, but doing all that while naked makes the experience even more susceptible to awkward moments.
While Discovery Channel's American reality survival series Naked And Afraid has no shortage of cringy scenes throughout its 14 seasons and 120 episodes, there are ten scenes that might just be the most cringe-inducing, packed with uncomfortable tension, embarrassing accidents, and awkward first meetings.
Season 10 includes an episode titled "No Safety in Numbers," where there are two duos, including two men paired together and two women paired together (later meeting up as a group).
This episode has one of the cringiest first meeting scenes in the reality TV series , as the "No Safety in Numbers" contestants are thrown off guard after receiving a partner of the same gender rather than what they expected, and the banter and small talk are some of the most awkward that the show offers as the duos try to make friendly conversation to distract away from their obvious confusion.
The season 9 episode titled "Category 5 Survival" is not only an example of how dangerous Naked And Afraid can be after contestants are pulled due to a hurricane coming through Florida at the time of filming, but it also contains a scene that involves a yellowjacket wasp sting in the worst possible place.
Being completely naked to the elements means unfortunate injuries may happen, and in this episode, Duke is the unlucky contestant that gets the awkward and uncomfortable injury when he steps on a yellowjacket wasp nest and gets a sting in probably the worst spot imaginable.
The episode titled "Threesome" in season 10 of Naked And Afraid introduces a group of three, two women and one man.
This episode holds a scene that is a prime example of the awkward first meetings Naked And Afraid is known for, but this scene is one of the cringiest due to the unexpected surprise of meeting two strangers naked rather than just one. The contestants themselves were also taken by surprise, making that meeting excruciatingly uncomfortable to watch.
The episode titled "Two Tarzans, One Jane" in season 11 introduces another group of three, this time with two men and one woman. The first meeting is awkward, but there is a scene that is even more cringy in this episode. This is when one of the men, Daniel, breaks down and cries because he likes the woman, Alexandra, but he feels like she likes the other man, Michael, better than him, leading Daniel to feel insecure.
While it is completely understandable for emotions to boil over when one is trying to survive in nature completely naked with strangers, the reason it is so cringy is the fact that this happened on day one.
Season 6 episode titled "Melt Down Under" contains an example of uncomfortable tension between the contestants. When Nicklas starts to give Laura only menial tasks and does all the heavy lifting himself, an argument ensues, and Nicklas tries to take some of the coals from the fire so he can try to survive without her.
The cringe comes when Laura starts throwing logs from her own fire into the river to keep Nicklas from stealing them, but by doing so, she is leaving herself with no fire. The duo is forced to tap out when the producers decide that Laura's verbal threat towards Nicklas puts them both in danger. This scene is also an example of how controversial a reality TV show Naked And Afraid is due to the dangerous conditions the contestants are put in. While tension between contestants is not uncommon, this scene is more extreme and ends with the duo being forced to leave, landing it as one of the cringiest scenes.
The season 6 finale titled "23 Days" includes a man named Don who goes through two partners due to how soon his first partner, Holly, taps. On the very first day, Holly drinks directly from a lilypad bulb, claiming the lily filters it.
Despite Don's warning that the lily straw might not work the way she thinks it will, she drinks through it and leaves the next day due to her stomach irritation. This scene is so cringe-inducing because of how quickly she taps as a direct result of the first survival decision she makes while on the show.
The season 6 finale of Naked And Afraid , a show with many little-known secrets , has another scene that is uncomfortable to watch. After Don's first partner Holly leaves, Don is given a new partner after producers decided day two was too early to leave Don alone to survive. Amber is Don's new partner, and there is a bit of tension between the two.
While one of the arguments between the two over Amber's excrement being in the camp is pretty cringy, the scene that tops it is when Amber discovers that she popped her breast implant in her sleep, and Don tries to brush her off when she tells him. The conversation is uncomfortable to watch as Amber tries to tell Don that her pain tolerance is pretty high, but the rupture really did hurt, all while the two avoid eye contact.
"Double Jeopardy" is a special episode that came out in between seasons 1 and 2. This episode has two duos meet up to work as a group of four. One of the women in the group named Cassie had a very relaxed personality that did not match up with the other three, who were all doing their part to survive while Cassie was basically just along for the ride.
The scene in this episode that is perhaps the most uncomfortable is where Cassie is supposed to be making a basket trap to catch fish, but she decides to take a dip in the water and then sunbathe to dry off in the middle of making the basket. Another person from her group ends up making a basket trap in half the time Cassie makes hers, and Cassie's ends up not being used due to how poorly constructed it is. This scene is one of the cringiest due to how oblivious Cassie is to how little she is doing compared to her teammates.
Season 3 episode titled "Hearts of Darkness" has another duo that really does not get along, and it is very obvious that their personalities clash from the very beginning.
While much of this episode contains uncomfortable tension and arguments, one of the cringiest scenes is when the woman, Carrie, tries to huddle with the man, Tom, at night to stay warm, but Tom gets up and goes to sit by the fire because he feels weird cuddling with a woman that is not his wife. Tom's exit to sit by the fire makes this scene incredibly awkward, and Carrie's annoyance by that is an added layer of cringe.
"Hearts of Darkness" has another scene that is quite awkward to witness. The other scene in question is when Carrie takes the map and sets off to find the extraction point without Tom, and she instead attempts to leave him behind.
The thing that makes this cringy is that despite having the map, Carrie goes a couple of miles in the wrong direction, and Tom ends up catching up to her, so her plan completely backfires.

"We've had some guys ask for a bigger blur," says Erin Gavin as he gets candid on why "the crotch is the easiest" and butts are OK to show.

“Do you have a problem with nudity?” That’s the first question I was asked during my interview.
Obviously not, because it’s naked bits all day long here. Let’s say somebody’s building a fish basket, working with their hands in front of their boobs or their junk — there’s a frame-by-frame process of cutting out arms and other things from the footage, putting the blur over across the original plate and layering the rest back in. Our job is to make it seamless for viewers so they’re less aware of the blurs. It can be extremely tedious work, so we’ve seen people come and go from here. They just don’t have it in them.
We like to think the fake boobs are easier to pixelate because they don’t move around as much — one of our guys, Shaun O’Steen , says he never really appreciated fake breasts until he started at this job — but, realistically, the crotch is easiest. There’s only one, and arms rarely get in the way.
We just did an episode that was predominantly male. That’s a little easier, but we’ve had guys ask for a bigger blur. We won’t necessarily accommodate that. We strive to make them as plain as a Barbie doll.
There are instances where we have to blur more than the actual body parts, like danglers. That’s when you see a shadow that makes your mind think you’re looking at a penis. And we’ve got several scenarios with the butt blur. Currently the general stipulation is to show the butt unless someone has a wide gait.
We have a lot of in-house terms. There’s the weenie waggler — that’s the stuff moving around. There’s the nip slip, of course. Side boob is popular. Our mandate is to cover the side boobs as much as possible. We’ve got boob shad — you have to be aware of their shadows as well — and, if they’re in water, we call them floaters. There’s also spillage, peen, naughty bits, the chinchilla … I’d explain that one, but you probably don’t want to know.
The nudity itself isn’t gross. But we first see these people fresh out of their hotels. As the days go on, 21 of them for those who last, they become more deteriorated and you start seeing things. Things like ticks in places they shouldn’t be. That can be a little gross.
