Now in its 58th year, the Greek Food Festival started as a bake sale when the church was on Swiss Avenue, prior to its move to the location at Hillcrest and Alpha roads. During a recent Saturday baking day, more than 50 church members of all ages showed up to help bake kourambiethes. The dough was made the day before. The process involved rolling it out and cutting it into cookies, baking them, setting them on tables covered in powdered sugar and sugaring the tops. After that, the cooled cookies were put into paper cups and packaged for sale during the festival. In the kitchen, Greek and English words flew back and forth as people moved trays full of cookies into their proper places. While many of the church members speak Greek, Austin said the church is open to all. The festival brings the church together, with many volunteering for more than one shift during the three-day run, said Constantinides. In addition to the kourambiethes, the sisters and volunteers make koulouria, paximathia, sesame cookies, fenekia and baklava.
