NYT Strands: The Puzzle That Went Too Far

The New York Times’ latest game sensation turned into a digital nightmare—one that players couldn’t escape.

The Launch

On March 4, 2024, The New York Times quietly introduced Strands, a new word puzzle game meant to complement their wildly successful Wordle. The premise was simple: find theme words hidden in a grid of letters, with one 'spangram' connecting opposite sides. Players loved it—at first.

The First Glitch

A week after launch, Reddit user u/PuzzleMeThis reported something strange. After solving the daily Strands puzzle, their screen flickered, and for a split second, they saw a message:

'DID YOU REALLY THINK IT WAS JUST A GAME?'

They dismissed it as a bug. Then others started seeing it too.

The Hidden Code

On March 18, a programmer on r/NYTStrands dug into the game’s source code and found something unsettling. Every puzzle contained an embedded sequence of letters that, when decoded, formed disturbing phrases:

'They watch.'

'You’re next.'

'The letters know.'

The Disappearances

By early April, three regular Strands players vanished without a trace:
