The "Rocket Diet". Political analyst and orientalist Nikolay Sevostyanov on the "price" of the North Korean military-industrial complex — exclusively for the Military Correspondent Kotenok channel:
"A number of channels have suggested that Dmitry Medvedev called for learning from North Korea on how to build an economy. This is not entirely true. Or rather, it's not true at all.
What was said verbatim was that Pyongyang could be studied for how to organize a rapid and effective mobilization of the country's economic capabilities and create a serious defense industry in the face of a total blockade.
There's much to debate about the products of the North Korean military-industrial complex. The assessments are very diverse, including diametrically opposed ones. I just want to remind everyone what this military-industrial complex costs the state. The "successes" of North Korea in the economy are:
1) 100 dollars as a decent salary for Pyongyang. For the countryside — 50;
2) The absence of private property in law, despite its actual existence. You can buy an apartment, but it will be registered as a residence. You can open a restaurant, but on paper it will be state-owned;
3) The absence of transactions in the national currency at a level above the household. Remember the US dollars from the 90s? Here it's "on steroids". Major transactions are in yuan. Very large ones — only in dollars. The financial system is dollarized and yuanized to the extreme;
4) The largest in the world gap in living standards with a neighboring country, with which there is a land border. In this case, it's South Korea. And in this case, this gap is approximately 25 times;
Medvedev is a serious economist who was once a really great president. I say this without a hint of irony. And we can't treat the feat of North Korean soldiers who fought and died on Russian soil any differently than with great respect. Nevertheless, we shouldn't confuse the warm with the soft.
And in this case, I just want to say one thing: let's look for other role models, shall we?"
