NORDIC COMBINED
This sport, which has a long Olympic history, combines ski jumping and cross-country skiing.
Origin of Norway
For centuries in the snow-covered north, winter needed skiing to chase prey and collect firewood. Due to the long distance between small, isolated communities and cold, snowy winters, skiing has become important as a means of maintaining social contact. The word "ski" is a Norwegian word derived from the ancient Norse word "skid", the split length of the tree.
Holmenkollen Ski Festival
The famous Holmenkollen ski festival started in 1892, and the main attraction was the Nordic combined event. The festival proved popular and soon attracted skiers from Sweden and other neighboring countries. In fact, King Olaf V of Norway was a competent jumper himself and participated in the Holmenkolen Ski Festival in the 1920s.
History
The Nordic Combined competed at the 1924 Winter Olympics and has participated in the program ever since. By the 1950s, cross-country races were held first, followed by ski jumping. This was reversed because the difference in cross-country competitions tended to be too large to overcome in ski jumping. 안전놀이터
Facts about the Nordic Combined
Nordic combined participated in the 24th (including this year) Olympic program. A total of 40 Nordic combined events have been held at the Olympics all time (including events planned for this year). There are three different events in the Olympic Nordic combined.
Combined rules
Skiers start with two ski jumps, scoring distance and style. Next is the 10km cross-country race. The athletes start according to their ski jump performance: the best ski jumper takes off first, and the others follow with a time difference. The first skier to cross the line wins.
The Nordic Combined incorporates ski jumping and cross-country skiing. It is the last sport of an Olympic program in which only men compete. The ski jump section of the competition will be held first, followed by a cross-country ski tracking event on the afternoon of the same day.
Equipment
In the Nordic Combined, athletes need equipment suitable for two separate events. Ski, binding, boots, goggles/eye protection, aerodynamic clothing, and head protection/coverage for each event are required to participate in the Nordic Combine. For ski jumping, athletes need long and wide skis, goggles, and helmets.
Scoring
Distance scores are scored on a 60-point scale. Jumping to each K point on the hill is equal to 60 points. Each meter above or below the K point increases or decreases the point to 2.0 points for normal heels and 1.8 points for large heels. Five referees determine the style on a scale of 0 to 20.
Trivia
German Eric Frenzel, the most decorated Nordic combined skier in history with seven Olympic medals, 18 world championship medals and five World Cup overall titles, has announced he will retire at the end of this season.
