NJ Transit Strike Disrupts Commuter Services Nationwide

BREAKING: NJ Transit Workers Go on Strike, Halting Commuter Services Statewide

Newark, NJ – May 12, 2025 – Thousands of New Jersey commuters faced chaos this morning as NJ Transit workers launched a statewide strike after last-minute contract negotiations failed overnight. The walkout has brought rail, bus, and light rail services to a standstill, leaving an estimated 800,000 daily riders scrambling for alternatives.

Stemming from Stalled Wage and Benefits Talks

The strike comes after months of tense negotiations between NJ Transit and the Transportation Workers Union (TWU) Local 234, which represents over 5,000 employees. Key sticking points include wage increases, healthcare contributions, and improved working conditions.

'We’ve been pushed to the brink,' said TWU spokesperson Maria Delgado at a press conference outside Newark Penn Station. 'Our workers kept this state moving through the pandemic, but management refuses to offer a fair deal that reflects our sacrifices.'

NJ Transit officials, however, claim the union’s demands are unsustainable. 'We’ve offered competitive raises and benefits, but their latest proposal would require massive fare hikes or taxpayer subsidies,' said NJ Transit CEO Kevin Corbett.

Commuters Left in the Lurch

With no NJ Transit buses or trains running, highways like the Turnpike and Garden State Parkway saw severe congestion as commuters turned to cars, rideshares, and overcrowded PATH trains. Many workers reported hours-long delays, while some opted to stay home altogether.

'I’ve been waiting for two hours just to get an Uber,' said frustrated commuter James Rivera of Hoboken. 'This is a nightmare.'

State Officials Urge Resolution

Governor Phil Murphy called an emergency meeting with both sides, urging a swift resolution. 'This disruption is unacceptable for our economy and working families,' he said. 'We need both parties back at the table immediately.'

Meanwhile, Amtrak is operating on a limited schedule, and private bus companies are adding extra trips, but capacity remains strained.

With no clear end in sight, the strike could extend for days—or even weeks—if negotiations remain deadlocked. Legal challenges may arise, as New Jersey law prohibits transit strikes under certain conditions, but union leaders insist their action is justified.
