Book description
David W. Phillipson notes in his introduction to this book that he has chosen to focus on pre-European contact Sub-Saharan Africa. That decision is both understandable and unfortunate. Understandable because the subject is vast and the temptation for an author to narrow the focus of their research is always present under those circumstances. Unfortunate because the perception of what African means has suffered from this kind of artificial sectioning and post-colonial subjective hand-wringing, where Sub-Saharan Africa is often interpreted as the real/genuine Africa. Im sure such implications were not intended by Phillipson and hed probably be upset to hear me mention it, but it is an issue.Phillipson is an exemplary scholar of East African and, to some extent, Southern African archaeology and, even within the constraints he had already set himself for the book, his greater familiarity with research in these areas is apparent. He also makes a bizarre dismissal of historical archaeology, considering it not worthy of study. Id suggest that this might reflect his schooling as historical archaeology is now an established field across the world and has been shown to offer valuable insights not only into the recent past but also in helping to develop and refine methods. Perhaps related to that dismissal is the greatest weakness of the book: Phillipson exhibits an alarming tendency to authoritatively come down on one side of an argument rather than presenting both sides equally. In effect, Phillipsons own opinion on a subject is presented as accepted dogma in what is, after-all, a text book aimed at undergraduates - such intellectual posturing can be admired in certain contexts, but is dangerous in this one.Overall then, this book has both strengths and weaknesses: like many others. The key to using it successfully is understanding those limits and related advantages. Where Phillipson discusses East and Southern African archaeology his opinion is to be valued, if always questioned. For West Africa it should be seen as a less authoritative voice and in North Africa it is almost absent. One final point: about two thirds of the book addresses hominins and the palaeolithic. Of course, in terms of human history this makes sense, but it is a peculiar decision by an author who has spent most of his career researching the African Iron Age.
