Louisville, KY — May 4, 2024 — In one of the closest finishes in recent Kentucky Derby history, Mystik Dan surged ahead in the final strides to claim victory at the 150th Run for the Roses, leaving a packed Churchill Downs crowd in awe. The three-year-old colt, ridden by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. and trained by Kenny McPeek, held off a late charge from favorite Sierra Leone and a fast-closing Forever Young to win by a nose in a thrilling three-horse photo finish.

Under overcast skies, the 20-horse field broke cleanly, with Track Phantom setting the early pace. Mystik Dan, sitting mid-pack for much of the race, made his move on the final turn, slipping through along the rail as Sierra Leone and Forever Young launched their bids from the outside. The trio battled furiously down the stretch, with Mystik Dan just keeping his nose in front at the wire.

Historic Win for Connections
The victory marked the first Kentucky Derby win for both Hernandez and McPeek, who had previously found success in other Triple Crown races but never in the Derby. 'This is the dream,' an emotional McPeek said. 'To win the Derby, especially in a finish like that—it’s unbelievable.'
Triple Crown Hopes Alive?
With the Derby secured, all eyes now turn to the Preakness Stakes in two weeks, where Mystik Dan could take the next step toward racing immortality. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Justify in 2018.
Controversy in the Stretch
The race wasn’t without drama—Sierra Leone’s jockey, Tyler Gaffalione, lodged an objection, claiming interference in the stretch, but stewards ruled the contact incidental, letting the result stand.
