Mystik Dan Wins the 150th Kentucky Derby in a Nail-Biting Photo Finish

Louisville, KY — May 4, 2024

In one of the closest finishes in Kentucky Derby history, Mystik Dan surged to victory at the 150th Run for the Roses, edging out Sierra Leone and Forever Young in a thrilling three-horse photo finish at Churchill Downs.

Trained by Kenny McPeek and ridden by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., the 18-1 longshot held off a late charge from the favored Sierra Leone (9-2) and Japan’s Forever Young (6-1) to claim the iconic blanket of roses. The official margin of victory was a mere nose, leaving the crowd of over 150,000 spectators in suspense as stewards reviewed the photo.

Race Recap

Breaking from Post 3, Mystik Dan settled just behind early leaders Track Phantom and Fierceness, the 3-1 favorite who faded after setting a blistering pace. As the field turned for home, Hernandez guided Mystik Dan through a tight opening along the rail, taking the lead in the final stretch.

Sierra Leone, under jockey Tyler Gaffalione, and Forever Young, with Ryusei Sakai, closed furiously in the final strides, but Mystik Dan held on in a heart-stopping finish. The official time for the 1¼-mile race was 2:03.34.

'I can’t even believe it,' Hernandez said after the race. 'We had a perfect trip, and he just kept fighting to the wire.'

Disappointment for Favorites

Pre-race favorite Fierceness (3-1) faded to 15th after leading early, while Just a Touch (10-1) finished fourth. Sierra Leone’s strong rally fell just short, continuing trainer Chad Brown’s quest for his first Derby win.

Road to the Triple Crown

Mystik Dan’s victory sets the stage for the Preakness Stakes on May 18, where he could face Derby rivals Sierra Leone and Forever Young, both of whom are under consideration for the second leg of the Triple Crown.
