Thread starter Caesar Start date May 26, Register to view full-size images Join today. Caesar Hard Yards. May 26, 43 9 Hi all. I'm currently planning a 10 day trip at the end of January, for three skiers one strong intermediate and two advanced. We skied Hakuba a few years ago and really enjoyed it, but are looking for somewhere a bit less westernised this time around. Nightlife isn't a concern - basically we're looking for a location with a fair variety of terrain where we can just immerse ourselves and ski for a solid week and a half. Both the above resorts seem to tick most of the boxes. At the moment we're leaning towards Myoko, because we'd prefer to stay in self-catered accommodation and we've got a contact there that can hook us up. It also sounds a little better for English speakers. My only real concern is the difficulty of the terrain at Myoko. It seems like most of the runs are easy to intermediate, and if you want anything challenging you need to go off-piste. We're not the type of skiers who need black runs from dawn to dusk, but variety is important and we'd like some steeps and bumps from time to time. I guess what I am asking is - how does the actual skiing at Myoko stack up against Shiga? Is there enough to keep a couple of advanced skiers interested and challenged for 10 days straight? Last edited: May 26, Nov 3, 3, 2, Perth. Seki Onsen and Suginohara offer a a bit of variety, and you could always do a day trip to Madarao I guess. Is splitting the trip between two resorts an option, transferring on a rest day? Having not been to Shiga, I don't really have an opinion on it beyond what I've read, pretty sure the recommendations will lean towards Shiga's terrain over Myoko though. Reactions: Caesar. Aug 8, 5, 16, Brisbane. My thoughts as well BF. Splitting the trip is a possibility, it would just be a question of cost really. Probably not a bad idea to maybe make a Saturday or Sunday a rest day and avoid the crowds. We'd sort of pencilled in 10 days skiing because it seems a waste to go that far for any less. What do people consider optimal at each resort? Pat42 One of Us Ski Pass. Ski Pass. Feb 18, 1, Reactions: Donza. Heinz Travelling again Ski Pass. Oct 14, 31, 23, 1, Adelaide. Not been to Myoko and Shiga was a very long time ago. Shiga has plenty of variety which should suit your group. I'd say splitting them should be fine. Allow for an easy travel between them. There's staff at the Madarao Kogen hotel that speak English if that is a concern. Jul 6, 6, 5, Sydney. Easy to do with only a half day of travel involved. Born2ski said:. Just a question regarding your self-catered accommodation. Are you planning on cooking all your own meals? Because there's no real supermarket in Akakura Onsen. Small one near Ikenotaira otherwise you need to get down to Myoko city or bring food up from Tokyo. Jan 1, 10, 8, Just a couple of points: So far as I know you will not find self-cater accommodation at Shiga Kogen. And probably not at Madarao either. Some of the self-cater places at Myoko will take you down to the supermarket. You can catch the bus down to Myoko Kogen and walk to the Daichi supermarket - we did this our first year at Myoko. We are hoping to offer day trips to other relatively nearby resorts next season. Madarao, Seki Onsen, Kurohime are near enough to do easily. We would look at some a bit further away if a group wanted that. Advanced skiing at Myoko - both Akakura Kanko and Suginohara provide a good range of skiing. They both have some bumps areas, long runs if you do a gondola top to bottom run, some steep stuff up the top but nothing extreme unless you hike out of bounds. Madarao has new tree runs. Have not skied them but have heard good reports about the resort from my guests that have been there. I cannot comment in Shiga Kogen as I have not been there. Nowhere will be perfect but where ever you go will be ok at that time of year. Reactions: PatMcrotch. Budgiesmuggler Part of the Furniture Ski Pass. May 7, 13, 15, Don't worry about driving on snow it's fairly easy. Thanks for the info. I didn't know much about Yuzawa, we just thought from looking at it that it was a bit less westerner-friendly and a bit more spread out than Myoko. It's good to get some feedback from someone who's been there. Jan 3, 5, 4, Sydney. Imo you would need a car to get the best out of it as it is quite spread out. Jan 1, 78, 50, 1, Melbourne Australia, often in Austin Texas. Yuzawa is much easier to get to from Tokyo. If you have to choose from Shiga Kogen or Myoko, and you have 10 days, I'd do 5 days at each. Runs are generally shorter at Shiga Kogen, but snow quality is better than Myoko because of elevation. Myoko gets more snow than Shiga Kogen. Jun 2, 7, 4, myokoskiresort. I'd go with the split too. From next year inter-resort transfers will be much easier as they are setting up a hub and spoke bus system at the new Iiyama shink station. Reactions: munja. Yes, going to take a big chunk of business away from the private Nagano shuttle methinks. When you head away from the places better known by westerners you need to be aware there is little English spoken. And you are unlikely to get self-cater accommodation. Some people are happy with this, others not. You just need to work out what is ok for you with respect to this. Some people I have spoken to that stayed in Japanese places where English is not spoken are unlikely to do it again. Some Japanese places will not take guests who do not speak Japanese. In both instances they are concerned about not being able to communicate if there is a problem. That said, we have been places where we are the only westerners and it has been ok. But my mogul skier was competing in events and everyone knew who we were and why we were there. They went out of their way to include us. Also those who had some English often sought us out to practice their English. I suppose the decision with respect to westernized or still mainly Japanese resorts comes down to whether you want to just dabble the toes or leap right to the Japanese experience. Draizuh One of Us. Jul 29, 1, 1, Wakatipu. I did a week in myoko this year staying in Akakura, It was ok, But the terrain wasnt overly exciting. Kanko was the pick for me but it was only interesting because i was using the lifts to speed up BC access. Sugi top lift was ok but 2 days would get old pretty soon. Ditto food. Never done shiga but as a snowboarder the resorts that dont allow such things dont interest me at all. If i go back to Japan next year, i will be going to Yuzawa. Shink access, soooooooo many resorts and above all the valley is simply beautiful. Draizuh said:. Zimboo said:. Reactions: hotsaki. I officially declare Yuzawa 'the next big thing'. In 4 days we only had 1 issue with being on snowboards and that was having download after seeing the snow monsters at Yokoteyama. You just be aware of where you are and there are no issues. Terrain is good, you cover a lot of interesting, varied countryside and different aspects. I really liked the place. Reactions: mannyk , Draizuh , JoeKing and 2 others. Jul 27, 11, 2, Rozelle, NSW. I'd go to Myoko, that's the place that gets all the snow, and they have some great Aussie owned English speaking lodges. BobGnarly One of Us. Feb 23, 4, 2, Nagano. Piste Again said:. Sandy said:. Got to Nosawa about nine I think. Could have gone to Myoko of course. The favourite for next year is Shiga then Myoko. BobGnarly said:. Lol that is so not true. Pretty funny claim that one! Aug 10, Hi Bob - re: Kijimadaira - have had a look at photos of the mountain, and thought it may be worth a day trip.
