On February 1, 2021, Myanmar's military, the Tatmadaw, abruptly seized power, detaining elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior officials. The coup followed contested elections in November 2020, which the military claimed involved widespread fraud, though independent observers found no evidence to substantiate the allegations. In a swift dawn raid, state television was taken over, communications were disrupted, and a one-year state of emergency was declared, transferring authority to the military commander-in-chief.
