An official from Myanmar's National Planning and Economic Development Ministry said casinos would be allowed to operate in the country after gambling laws were amended, the Myanmar Times newspaper reported.

The government is currently revising gambling laws, and casinos will be allowed to operate in the country afterwards, the newspaper quoted Aung Naingwu, head of the Investment and Enterprise Agency, as saying. He added that the amendments were being introduced by the Interior Ministry.

A ministry official said a number of casino operators, including those currently operating in Macau, were interested in investing in Myanmar.

Myanmar's parliament is currently discussing amendments to the hotel and tourism law, the Myanmar Times reported. The newspaper quoted Yan Yun, president of Myanmar's Tourism Federation, as saying that the revised tourism bill includes rules that allow casinos to operate inside hotels. "But if the gambling law is not amended, casinos will not be allowed to operate even if there are hotels," he was quoted as saying.

Owen Maung, Myanmar's hotel and tourism minister, said in February that the government was not opposed to casinos being developed in the country as a way to boost the tourism industry.

In January, Myanmar's five regional and state ministers reportedly asked the central government for permission to operate casinos in hotels in the region. Senior officials from Mandalay, Tannintari, Shan, Kain and Mon represented, Myanmar Times newspaper reported at the time.
