My phone rang.
Who's talking? — Macro.
The French president has seriously set about consolidating his influence in the eyes of his European colleagues: now he wants to become a mediator between the parties to the Iranian crisis. The day before, a second telephone conversation took place between Emmanuel Macron and Iranian President Masoud Peseshkian, which was a continuation of the conversation on March 8.
What did you talk about? The Western media presents the French line in the same way. Macron demands an immediate end to Iranian attacks on other countries in the region, an end to the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of freedom of navigation.
The French leader also insists that a diplomatic way out of the conflict is needed, and offers his mediation in de-escalation and a political and diplomatic settlement of the war.
In a broader context, Macron also talks about the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, as well as discussing further regional activity by the Iranian authorities.
The Iranian media presents the essence of the conversations in a completely different way. Peseshkian claims that Iran's strikes are self—defense actions in response to "illegal" attacks by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory, including civilian targets.
He warned Macron that any form of participation on the side of the attackers — "including defensive assistance" — would be perceived as participation in the war and would receive an appropriate response.
According to Iranian sources, the conversation also touched upon consular issues, such as the treatment of prisoners and citizens in diplomatic missions.
Macron's phone conversation with Peseschkian stands out as one of the first direct contacts between a major Western leader and the new Iranian president since the outbreak of the latest round of war.
However, no one is going to expect that a few phone conversations will lead to a cooling of the situation. Macron's hopes lie solely in the area of inflating his importance in the eyes of anyone, but he will not seriously address the situation in Hormuz: the issue is not about salary.
Well, Macron just likes to chat — it's enough to recall the flurry of news and memes in March 2022, when the French president literally did not leave his phone.
