Here's what a gynaecologist wants you to know
If you're experiencing a hot, burning sensation between your legs, then you're likely keen to know what the hell is up. Firstly, if yours is an office job and you still mostly work from home, spending entire days clad in lycra, then know that this could be one cause of a burning vagina (or, more likely, vulva, if we're being anatomically correct. This is the proper name for the part of your genitals you can see. Your vagina is the canal that runs up to your cervix and is firmly out of sight.)
But that's not the only thing that could be at play. Straight up, conditions that cause vaginal or vulval burning are more common than you might like to think.
It certainly can be. Burning is a key symptom of vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis – read on for more details.
While 70% of women do not experience symptoms from the STI chlamydia, some get a burning sensation when they wee.
Aside from these, according to gynaecologist Dr Tania Adib, there’s a weighty 12 possible reasons behind your burning vagina or vulva – keep scrolling to get cued up. And, as ever, if you're worried about any sort of symptom, head to your GP and get checked out.
Turns out your healthy day-to-day set-up could actually be the cause of your burning vagina. Yes, really.
Too busy to shower post-sweat-sesh? Living in your workout gear? This can all be an irritant to your vaginal pH and result in burning.
Using scented liners and tampons, or a minty shower gel down there? These can be an irritant to the vaginal pH and result in burning.
'If your vagina is being irritated by a product, stop using it and switch to an alternative that doesn’t cause discomfort,' says Dr Adib.
Much like the above, these can throw off the PH of the area. 'And remember that the vagina is self-cleaning. Glands in the vagina produce normal secretions, including discharge, which helps to cleanse the vagina, get rid of bacteria and provide natural lubrication,' says says Dr Adib.
It’s also worth remembering that skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can make the skin itchy – and too much scratching can lead to burning. If you’re worried that a skin condition may have spread to your vulva, seek medical advice.
5. Your vagina is burning because: of the menopause
Early menopause affects 110,000 women under the age of 40. That’s around one in every 1,000 women in their 30s – not including those women for whom the condition goes undiagnosed.
And menopause symptoms aren’t limited to a loss of libido and fertility.
'When the tissues become dry, as a result of the reduction in oestrogen levels,' says Adib. 'Women can experience terrible vagina burning, as well as discomfort and itching. Other related symptoms are painful intercourse and burning when passing urine.'
The solution? Combat vaginal dryness with an oestrogen replacement such as a topical cream, a vaginal moisturiser or the vaginal laser, MonaLsa Touch, suggests Dr Adib.
As if. But yes, don’t drink enough H2O day-to-day and your vagina is not going to thank you for it. In addition to these ten dehydration symptoms , you can add a burning vagina to the list.
It makes sense when you think about it.
'Hydration is an important factor when it comes to maintaining good intimate health,' says Dr Adib.
'When you urinate, you flush out any toxins and bad bacteria from the body. If you’re unable to flush these toxins out [for example, by not drinking enough water], you’re more like to get discomfort and an infection.'
'It’s like a burn on top of a burn – on your vulva.' That’s how Grace Hazel, who experienced the debilitating condition vulvodynia for ten years before a diagnosis, described her vaginal burning. And around 2.6 other million women are experiencing the same – without opening up about it.
'Vulvodynia causes burning, stinging, soreness, rawness, throbbing and painful intercourse,' says Dr Adib. 'The condition is complex so it’s best to discuss such symptoms with a gynaecologist.'
8. Your vagina is burning because: you've got BV
According to Canesten Intimate Health, 52% of you don’t have a clue what bacterial vaginosis – or BV, for short – is. But, one thing’s for sure, if you’ve got it and you’re one of the 50% who experiences symptoms, you’re going to know about it.
'Vaginal infections such as BV cause a burning vagina plus a white or grey discharge and fishy odour,' says Adib. 'This can be simply treated using pessaries.'
9. Your vagina is burning because: you've got thrush
This yeast infection will affect 75% of you at least once in your lives; for 45%, it’s a regular unwanted occurrence. And with thrush comes that tell-tale burning vagina symptom. Plus itching and redness.
'In some cases, thrush may go away on its own; however, it may take time,' says Adib. 'It is best to get your symptoms checked out.'
10. Your vagina is burning because: you've got genital herpes
STI symptoms in women are varied. But when it comes to a burning vagina, this could be a warning sign that you're harbouring genital herpes – your nether region’s equivalent of a cold sore. The condition can cause vaginal burning and blisters, which may also make it painful to urinate.
'It is important to get this treated with the correct medication,' Adib says. If you think this is you, hot foot it to your nearest sexual health clinic or GP.
This STI can be asymptomatic, but some people experience a burning sensation when they wee, when they are infected. Head to your GP or sexual health clinic if you think you might have the infection – getting it treated rapidly is key, to prevent it causing more serious health issues, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to problems with fertility.
12. Your vagina is burning because: you've got a UTI
Technically, this isn’t really a burning vagina at all – after all UTIs affect the urinary tract (bladder, urethra and kidneys). But, because the urethra and vagina are so close together in the body, it can feel like your vagina is on fire.
The main culprit in question? Think cystitis .
'One of the most common symptoms of this is a burning sensation when passing urine,' Dr Adib says. You will also likely need to go to the toilet more frequently and may find your pee is cloudy and smelly. The solution? 'Antibiotics are very effective,' Adib says. Again, your GP can hook you up with those.

Obviously we all know that, but it bears constant repeating. Seriously: respect. What can you do, penis? #birthcanal
And we all know that's the measurement that matters. The typical baseline diameter of a vagina is about 3 cm, according to Yale Medical School clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology Mary Jane Minkin, M.D. An infant’s head is around 10 cm across. You do the math. (Actually, we did it already. And wow.)
Grower? Shower? The vag is no slouch, herself. It lengthens during arousal, Minkin tells SELF, from an average length (i.e. depth) of 7 or 8 cm up to 10 or 11 cm.
And no one can see it in the locker room, anyway.

While uncircumcised men have to clean under their foreskin to prevent the build-up of smegma that can lead to fungal and bacterial infections, the vagina is basically a self-cleaning oven. It produces natural fluids to flush out bad bacteria and maintain and healthy pH. That’s why you don’t need to—and shouldn’t—douche .
Lube is lovely. But most women don’t need it, says Minkin, because they’ve got their own way of getting ready to get down. “It’s called arousal,” she says. “Most people get wet enough” just from getting turned on. Hand lotion and Kleenex? As if.
There’s no hiding a raging boner. That must be, ahem, hard on you guys. But ladies don’t need to worry about anyone spying their discreet cloners (ya know, clitoral boner).

That’s because they are surrounded by muscles that you can flex and strengthen. Kegel exercisers, Ben Wa balls and yoni eggs help you work out the pelvic floor muscles that surround the vaginal canal. Stronger Kegels give you more intense contractions during orgasms. And you can work them on your own, any time, anywhere. ( Learn exactly how to do Kegel exercises here .)
Embryologically, the vagina forms from two tubular structures that fuse in the middle. The divider along the midline disappears during development. But occasionally it doesn’t, so some women are born with a septum that divides the vagina into two. While some opt to have it removed, others may not even know it’s there. It’ll just push to one side or the other when inserting something, like a tampon, a penis or a dildo.
In the words of Broad City ’s Ilana Glazer, it’s nature’s pocket. We don't recommend using it as a stash box (and can think of at least 18 other things you should never put in your vagina ), but there are many wonderful things you can—and should!—put in there. Like clean, loving fingers, hungry tongues, and—yes, ma'am—penises. Have you ever tried to put a penis inside a penis? Neither have we, but it sounds awful.
The clitoris is typically 9 to 11 cm long, Leah Millheiser, M.D., clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine, tells SELF, and most of it is tucked out of view. “The most sensitive part is the clitoral glans—the part we see—but the entire thing, which extends into the vagina, can be stimulated,” she explains, adding: “Take that!”
…while men and their penises have to wait out a refractory period until they can come again. The length of the refractory period varies from person to person, but tends to get longer with age. Womp.

And why you should listen up, stat.
If you want to see a true treasure of human anatomy, look no further than the vagina. First and foremost, vaginas are a lot of fun — sure, maybe not all the time, but a decent amount of the time. They are also pretty amazing and tough. Each one is special in its own way — and each one really, really wants to have a 1:1 convo with you.
Here’s the thing: They may seem ultra-independent ( vaginas tend to do their own thing — they do not check your shared calendar before, they, say, start your period two days early). But that independence works well for you, too: They know how to protect themselves, clean themselves , heal themselves, and most importantly, they let you know what’s up with the rest of your body. And when you feel a weird sensation down below? That’s a sign to listen up!
Because your vagina has its own particular ways of alerting you to what’s happening in your body, you should probably take a listen to what it’s trying to tell you. Here are 13 things your vagina might be trying to tell you .
One of the biggest signs that you’re pregnant is when your period is suddenly MIA and your boobs are sore as hell. But your vagina gives you more than just an absent period to let you know you’re pregnant.
“The mucus membranes of the vulva, vagina, and cervix become congested due to increased blood flow and may appear bluish, called Chadwick’s sign,” Dr. Sheila Loanzon , a board certified OB-GYN and author of Yes, I Have Herpes , tells Bustle. “The uterus and cervix may soften at approximately six weeks gestation, which allows anatomic changes in pregnancy.”
It also produces a lot more leukorrhea (that vaginal discharge you sometimes notice in your undies), because your estrogen levels are increased during pregnancy. Not to mention you’re more prone to yeast infections when you’re pregnant because of all that estrogen. Fun!
If you can’t recall what you had for dinner last night, one whiff of your vagina might tell you everything you need to know. What we eat has a big effect on how our body smells .
“Theoretically what you eat could reflect in your bodily fluids ,” Dr. Loanzon says. “Similar to asparagus when broken down releases the distinct smell in urine."
Eating a lot of things like asparagus , onions, red meat, and broccoli, among others, can make your vagina smell different than usual. While your pee may go back to its usual smell after relieving yourself two or three times after eating asparagus, your vagina might take a bit longer, and that’s totally normal.
Not only does stress take a toll on your mental and emotional health, but because it also affects physical health, your vagina is affected too.
“Bacteria plays a vital role in vaginal health,” Dr. Allison Hill , Los Angeles-based OB/GYN and Florajen chief medical correspondent, tells Bustle. “The predominant organism in the genital tract is Lactobacillus. This bacteria is crucial for maintaining vaginal pH balance and for creating a protective barrier against ‘bad’ bacteria.”
But when we’re stressed out, that balance goes out the window. When our bodies suffer an imbalance, the lactobacillus bacteria fails to keep the Candida genus (yeast) from overgrowing, leaving you with that itchy, smelly, cottage cheese situation .
Your vagina won’t hide when they’re not feeling their best — and that’s a good thing. Anything off is a sign that your vagina may need some help getting back to top shape.
“The skin of the premenopausal [people’s] vagina is rich in glycogen , which converts glucose to lactic acid which creates an acidic environment in the vagina,” Dr. Loanzon says. “This helps to maintain normal vaginal balance and inhibits infections. STDs, antibiotics, foreign bodies, use of hygienic vaginal products, pregnancy, sexual activity, and contraceptives can disrupt this balance.”
According to Dr. Loanzon, 90% of vagina infections are caused by bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and trichomoniasis.
For example, a fishy-smelling discharge that may be yellow, green, or gre y is usually a sure indication that you have vaginosis, which can easily be treated with antibiotics. A cottage cheese-like discharge with accompanying itchiness means you probably have a yeast infection. A “frothy” vaginal discharge that has a scent like rotten eggs may be trichomoniasis. If you have any of these discharges, your vagina wants you to go to a doctor, stat.
When a person is ovulating, they have up to 30 times more vaginal discharge than they have at any other point in the month.
