Pursuing A Profession As A Nurse
If I had lived in the early 1900s, my life would have been completely different. I currently am pursing a profession as a nurse. A century ago, this would not have been a possibility. First, the health care professional system was not well established as about ninety percent of all doctors did not have a college education. Therefore, jobs such as nursing were few and rare. It probably would not an option for me and would have been belittled if considered. In addition, I probably would not have had the opportunity to pursue a proper education, even more so as a woman. First, people who do not like shocking discoveries and prefer the safety of the known must refrain from sociology. In addition, people who do not feel temptation or desire to discover more about humanity should also avoid sociology. Lastly, people who are only interested in their own “conceptual constructions,” or their own thought and ideas, do not need sociology.
Berger would probably disagree with the statement that anyone can be sociologist because we all experience human behavior. He states the purpose of sociology is to look beyond the commonly accepted human behavior. It is to debunk the common understanding of social structures and find the hidden, greater driving force behind social mechanisms. Although people may think about and experience human behavior, they must be ready to question and analyze the deeper reasons behind the accepted beliefs. Numerous factors influence the decision to marry someone. For instance, social class influences marriage. This is because people of similar social class go through the same experiences. Therefore, it may be difficult for people in drastically different social classes to meet, let alone consider marriage. In addition, the different social class leads to different life experiences, and thus different ideas and perceptions. These may greatly differ in people with differing social classes, leading to a lack of connection and difficulty seeking marriage. Similarly, the race or ethnicity of a person influence the culture and environment they grow up in. Therefore, their differing environments may cause differences in ideas and experiences that may hinder a happy marriage. Income can also motivate someone to seek marriage or reject it. Individuals may reject marriage because they are not financially stable and do not feel competent to provide for a family. On the other hand, people may marry into a wealthy relationship to secure financial stability. Religion also holds a great weight in the marriage decision process. Many religions have specific rules and directions on marriage and believers may not want to stray from the teachings.
