Both my brother and I are transgender - female to male. I also want to make clear is that I'm talking from my experience with me, my brother and friend, and not for the rest of the trans community.
Consider how you typically see transgender people portrayed in movies: Ace Ventura ended with the transgender woman (who was the villian) being outed, and half the police force immediately vomiting. Society has trained us that being transgender is something to be reviled, not embraced.
So about 4 years ago my brother came out as trans and I've been struggling with my gender identity even before that. My family and relatives took it really well, everybody is supportive. But him being trans is one of the main reasons holding me back from coming out. This might sound weird as I know that my family isn't transphobic.
